The rollers can be changed. Low battery will cause this issue and if it happens too often then the rollers wear down and the sprag needs changing. Try a charger like the optimate to keep the battery topped up. The charging system is problematic on them and needs modifications to work corre

Raptor 80 started turns but does not engage motor

sounds like the starter clutch is bad. the rollers get worn or the sprag gear gets worn so it will not grab and start the motor. check that out. you will have to take the engine side cover off to see it.

Yamaha starting problems

if its the sprag type starter you need to check starter gear to see if it's still in oe piece. If it is then you will need to access the sprag clutch itself which is in the engine. If the starter is the inertia type ( with a solenoid on the side of the starter) then its probably just a sticky pinion assembly. Remove starter from engine and spray the pinion with methylated spirit ,dry it off then spray with graphite lube.

Ducati 900 starter turns, but won't engage engine

Hi, Anonymous the starter drive/Bendix is a mechanical gear driven component that engages the clutch pack ring gear to turn over the engine. It has an internal mechanism that allows the gear to turn in one direction and once the engine starts allows the drive gear to free spin. If gear free spins in both directions then the drive gear has failed it is not serviceable and needs to be replaced. Hi - This problem happens only after motor has been running and is all heated up. After I shut it down (for refueling for example) and then try to start it back up, the starter make a loud grinding sound...

You may have an "over running clutch" going bad on you. This part does the same thing that the old "Bendix" used to do. It is a one-way bearing or sprag unit. When the starter goes to start the engine, the starter is turning faster than the engine. The unit locks up and turns the engine. Once the engine fires, the engine is turning much faster than the starter. If the starter doesn't freewheel, the speed of the starter would destroy it. So, when the engine starts up, the "over running cltuch" unlocks and allows the starter drive gear to freewheel. The part is inside the starter. It can be replaced but it requires that the starter be removed and disassembled.

Good Luck
Steve

Hi i have a 2002 gas gas fse 450 replaced starter motor bushes and sprag clutch and battery. and it wont start when i kick the bike over the engine feels tigh is it because the engine has not been started...

it could be your starter cluch draging take it off again and check it out or you will burn out the starter trying to start the engine if all is well there put a fuw drops of engine oil into the pot down the spark plug hole and try kicking the bike over without a plug in it till it frees off

GPZ 500 - starter chain spins on cogs

First may I say I don't know for sure your bike model that well (In- line 4 cylinder or water cooled twin?) BUT I am very experienced with motorcycles ( I am a qualified motorcycle mechanic & have owned GPZ 550, Z650, ZIR-II ).
For starters Kwasaki have used two different methods of delivering drive from the starter motor to the engine. Gear driven & chain driven. The chain driven type ( like GPZ 900 R ) were equiped with a tensioner. If yours has a tensioner be sure to change it with a new one also.

Both of the styles of drives ( chain & gear ) incorporate what is called a starter clutch mechanism.

This is what allows drive from the starter motor to be applied only when the starter motor is activated & free wheel when the engine runs. It is a one way clutch mechanism.

I am explaining this because a verry common fault on all electric start bikes is the starter clutch. ( except Moto-Guzzi, BMW, Harley which use a car style starter with a sliding pinion ).

When the starter clutch is faulty it displays a very distinct symptom.

When the starter motor is activated, you will hear a "whizz" followed by a crunching noise rather reminicent of a chain jumping teeth on a sprocket.

If this is the case with your bike & is what is what led you to change the chain, plus is what your continueing problem is, I would suggest you check the starter clutch.

The starter clutch comprises of a drive gear(the one that the chian, or startor motor output shaft drives), 3 rollers, three springs with guide pins, & the housing plate for the rollers & springs with guides.

To effectivly repair a starter clutch it is necessary to replace the gear, the 3 rollers, the 3 springs, sometimes the housing plate if it is also worn (from the rollers moveing)

I am hopefull this may shed some light as to the cause of your problem.

If not please post a comment & I'll try to help you further.

Kick start will start it. Electric starter will not turn over.

Engine is still cold, battery doesn't have enough juice to supply extra current to ignition coil coz its almost use up by electric starter. Check battery contact. Head light is on.

Commonly on morning when engine is still cold kick about 10 consecutive time before turning on the switch. It will help lubricate it inside and generate some heat. This will lessen starting current to be use up by the starter. Also give some extra fuel to the line.

Hope it helps

It doesn´t start

The relay to the starter solenoid may need replacing.
check your earth returns on the starter to car-body and all other wiring connections, clean terminals are good.
Quickfix for sticky starters = tap starter with a hammer and kick her over, works for some other cars like mitzibishis
