The only place you're going to find that is in a service manual. Your bike should be equipped with a Kiehin CV type carburetor. Disassembly of this carb is not recommended for the beginning mechanic. There are certain parts that can go in either of two ways and only one way is correct. Also. some settings are better described with a picture. If you want to do this job, I'd strongly suggest that you purchase a service manual for your bike.

Good Luck

Hi Thomas, if you have a carburator the usual suspects are:
1. Damaged or restricted fuel tank venting system (gas cap).
2. Inlet system air leak.
3. Vacuum piston malfunction.
4. Accelerator pump leaking or no output.
5. Plugged bowl vent.
6. Fuel level (float chamber) too low.
7. Restriccted fuel supply passages.
8. Plugged jets or passages.
9. Worn or damaged needle or needle jet.
10. Enrichner valve not seated or leaking.

Sportster timing

Time to check the firing timing and tuning of the fuel. you need to flowchart the method of timing the engine to the right timing angle. Also the fuel tuning must be redone which all requires tools and instruments to monitor and correct the settings.
Clean and reset carb, check all port , clean the plugs, adjust the gaps and checck timing settings.

How can i tell if i have a sportster hugger or just a sportster 883?

The difference between the 883 and the hugger were very small. the hugger came stock with buck horn handlebars and a shorter suspension. the differences are still noticeable today between a standard 883 and and 883 low.
  • Hugger model made even lower
  • Standardized hand controls
  • Production Information:
  • XLH 883 $4,499
  • XLH 883 'Hugger' $5,075
  • XLH 883 'Sportster Deluxe' $5,559
  • XLH 1,200 $6,400
also check your vin number if you have and 883 it should read 1hd4cam........ or for a hugger 1hd4cem....

My bike starts but does not want to idle

Either the idle screw is turned down to low, or there is a vacuum leak, or the carb needs to be cleaned. Make sure the throttle cable doesn't have too much slack in it either.

Remove the carb soak in carb cleaner, **** out small bleed holes with a wire from a wire brush etc. One of the passageways is still clogged, or the float is sticking.

Engine turns over but won't start lots of back firing

It sounds like it's not getting fuel for one reason or the other. If the tread is correct, you '01 Sporty is equipped with the vacuum operated petcock. If the diaphragm is bad in the petcock, no fuel gets to the carb. If the vacuum line is off the rear of the petcock, the VOES switch, or the carb, it will get no fuel. These petcocks are known to be a problem area. I always advise the purchase of a Pingle petcock and replace the original. If the Pingle is too pricey, go for a stoke pre-1996 original equipment petcock.

Now, if the bike has been sitting up for a long period of time (longer than a year), you may have to remove, disassemble the carb, and clean the jets and air passages out. Regrettfully, this is not a job for most amateurs unless they are mechanically inclined.
