You may have a bad rear brake light switch. Find the rear brake master cylinder and the metal hose coming out of it going to the rear brake. Follow the line as it goes under the bike. You'll find a tee fitting in the line with a pressure switch in the line. The switch will have at least two wires plugged onto it. Unplug the wires and see if the brake light goes out. If so, replace the switch.

Good Luck
Steve

Where is the brake light fuse on the Yamaha v star 1300

Hi, Pat before diagnosing any brake light issue always check the bulb and fuse first for integrity a brake light staying on is usually caused by the front brake light switch, witch is mechanical, not disengaging. On early models moving the throttle control housing closer to the front brake master cylinder is the main fix. On late models, the switch gets tweaked and needs to be realigned. A brake light that does not come on when the brake lever is applied can be caused by a faulty switch or no continuity in the wiring at the switch. The rear brake light switch is hydraulic and it is extremely rare to malfunction in a closed circuit condition causing the brake light to stay on. Usually, rear brake light switch issues are caused by no brake pedal free play or a sticky rear master cylinder piston. A brake light that does not come on when the rear brake pedal is depressed can be caused by a faulty switch, air in the brake line, or no continuity in the wiring at the switch. Hand brake light on dash of my 1983 FJ40 will not turn off

Hi. Look at the brake master cylinder. See if the brake fluid is low. If there is a wire and a connector on the side of the reservoir, this is the 'fluid-height sensor' when the fluid is low (as the brakes wear, the fluid level drops proportionally), the fluid level is below the sensor, and creates a circuit, thusly illuminating the light.

My brake light is staying lit even when not pressing the brake.

There is a switch at both the rear and the front brake. The rear is a little easier to check, look at the brake pedal closely and you will see the switch. You can unplug the switch there and if the light goes out you found the trouble. The front brake switch is at the end of the brake handle and a little harder to check.

Brake light stays on

There is a switch in your right-hand switch housing which is activated when your front brake lever is depressed.  If this breaks, your brake light will stay on.  To check this, you'll need to take apart your switch housing.  The two screws are a torx 25 and the two holding your master cylinder on are a torx 27.  The switch is right behind the brake lever.  If this is the problem, you'll have to buy a new switch and sodder it in.

Left brake light stays on

Usually when your signal blinks rapidly it indicates a blown bulb.   Switch on your four-way flashers and check your bulbs at each corner.  On the brake light staying lit, check to see if the left-rear bulb is installed correctly and is the correct bulb for the application.  I've seen people force bulbs in sockets causing the braking element of the bulb to light instead of the parking element.  The braking element is much brighter than the parking element.

I.P Brake light is staying on.. what does this mean

Hi,

Offhand, the brake light warning on most dashboards would indicate that the hand/emergency brake is engaged. If even when the hand/emergency brake is disengaged or is in normal position and the light is still lit, it could indicate that:
  • the brake fluid in the reservoir is below minimum level;
  • and possibly the brake shoes/pads need replacement.
Just a start, do postback how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.
