I can't give you a solution but it might only need the starter drive gear (clutch assembly).

If the all you're hearing is a whine, the problem is most likely the starter. To be more specific, it's the starter clutch or starter drive. Since you didn't tell me what year your bike is this is about as much as I can tell you. The starter drive (1984 and earlier) on the earlier model bikes is in the primary. On anything later that is equpped with the Nippondenso type starter, the starter clutch is inside the starter. If you can remove and repair the starter, you can save some money by replacing just the starter clutch instead of the entire starter. If you're going to have to pay someone else, it's cheaper to simply replace the starter rather than pay the labor to disassemble, repair, and reassemble the starter. Any savings are quickly eaten up by the labor charges.

Good Luck
Steve

1999 Pontiac Sunfire 5 speed won't start. Replaced spark plugs and checked ignition coil (fine). Sounds like it wants to turn over but makes a "whining" noise. Please assist. Thank you!

Is the engine turning over with the key in the start position? If the engine is not spinning over and you hear a whining noise, the starter is not engaging the flywheel. If the engine is turning over with the starter engaged, the engine has most likely jumped time that creates low or no compression which results in the whining noise.

Starting problems

Need to know what year you have. If the starter solenoid is not activating the starter drive or jack shaft then the starter would spin freely and whine. If you have a bent shaft or otherwise that will stop gear engagement when you try to start it would just spin and whine. SO, if you get a whine the starter is spinning but not engaging.

If the starter relay makes a click everything up to there is working.
If the solenoid makes a click everything up to there is working ie the low current circuit is working. If the starter spins the high current circuit is also working and that leaves the above that the starter drive is not working to engage the starter with the clutch ring gear.

Nissan pathfinder 1995 model SUV, when i try to start it its making a whinning noise then i hear a hard clucking sound and the whinning goes away without the car starting

Does the engine crank at all ?
The low whine could be the starter turning but not engaging the flywheel.
The clunk could be when the bendix gear on the starter makes contact with the flywheel.
If the starter does not have enough voltage, the solenoid or bendix may not engage. Even tho you replaced both the starter and battery, there could be a problem with the cables or the ground connection.

Hi, the cause of this problem is the link/spring in the solenoid that engages the starter gear has broken. Remove the starter and inspect the mechanism. You can also test it by reconnecting the wires with the starter off the engine. See if the gear moves up into position when the key is turned to start. If not, replace the starter. Please let me know if you have more questions, and thanks for using FixYa.

My 93 Plymouth voyager wont start or make a clicking noise when I urn the key

The clicking you hear it the starter engaging the flywheel but not rotating it - the starter motor has failed. It must be replaced.

I think my starter solenoid is bad. When I try to start my truck it will turn over and then start clicking?

I think your battery is the more likely the problem. If the solenoid did not engage you would hear a high pitch whine with no click. The clicking is the solenoid trying to engage the starter gear but it only initially engages until the battery current drops causing it to oscillate. Turn on your dome light and see if it dims when you try to start it. If it does try to charge or jump the battery.

How would you know if a start signal is reaching starter solenoid? new starter , battery is good some thing is killing volts before car starts

When your solenoid receives a voltage signal from the ignition you can hear a "click" when it engages. If your engine turns over like it wants to start or you hear a clicking or a buzzing under the hood your starter works. If you turn your lights on after starting and they work it's not electrical at all. If you try to start it and you hear a high pitch whining type of noise and then your battery dies, then the teeth on your flywheel are gone.  The starter will just spin there and it will drain your battery with a quickness.

Starter just spining

I would try to start it again and all I get is a spinning and whining sound from the starter. It is as if the starter is not engaging somehow. A while after it cools down the bike will start agian. Does anyone have any possible answers. Thanks in advance!A lot of the starters are designed so the bendix shaft shears if it sticks to the fly wheel or over torques. If you remove the starter, connect a pair of vice-grips to the bendix gear. Jump the starter with a pair of cables, to get it to activate. The bendix will probably kick out, but not rotate. You should hear the armeture spin. Otherwise, the bendix will kick out, and you'll hear the armeture hum. If that's the case, check to make sure the fly wheel has been ground down, on the side facing the starter. However, you would probably hear grinding not spinning, if that were the problem.,,,
