Hi I just purchased a sportster 1200 ,2000 model There is a lot of oil spitting from the crankcase breether The bike has only done 14000 km The breether hose is located under the seat Does anyone now why oil is spitting out Thanks

I have a 1973 harley davidson sportster xlh 1000 with drag pipes i just bought it, but it ran great it sat for 3 months now it pops and backfires and is have a oily mist from the air cleaner and i dont...


popping and backfiring sounds like a lean fuel mixture, caused by the wonderful gas we are getting these days. try draining fuel system, put in fresh fuel. the oily substance is coming from the crankcase vents located within the air filter cavity, a lot of bikes do that, ck. oil level not over full.

How to drain engine crankcase oil 2004 1200 sportster


Run the bike to get it to normal operating temperature. Put an thin oil pan on the ground under the center of the engine. Look for the little rubber hose coming from the bottom of the bike with a plastic plug in it and held in the hose with a clamp. Loosen the clamp and save to reuse if it is the screw type. Then pull the plug out and open up the oil fill cap on right side by the seat.

If your bike is a 2010 model, you can use the same oil in both areas, the engine and transmission. If you are in doubt, simply drain the oil in both places and put the correct amount and kind of oil back it. No Problem. Italian, I hope.

Knocking sound at the left side of the crankcase when i open the crankcase i found out that the chain and the clutch were so dry no lubricant...What is the problem the oilpump or the oil line was clugged...


On your Sportster, the primary oil is not fed by the oil pump. It is not even part of the oiling system of your bike. You manually put the oil in the primary by pouring it in the hole where you check your primary chain tension. The maintenance schedule on your bike suggest that the oil in the primary be changed every 5000 miles. The primary holds approximately a quart of oil. The oil that lubricates your primary also lubricates your transmission. So, if your primary case was dry, your transmission was running dry as well.

Excess motor oil that blew out the oil cap ,when you've parked for a long time the oil in the tank will drop down in the crankcase,then when you start the motor it will go back in the oil tank and then overflow the oil level...You must have to drain the oil tank again and refill it at the correct oil level....

Oil is coming out of the air beather


This is a common problem. Now the heading says your bike is a 1979 Sportster. Regardless of what it is, there is a crankcase breather that is routed to your air cleaner. This was done to satisfy the EPA regulation that crankcase fumes must be run through the engine to be burned. With the crankcase air come a mist of oil. This oil builds up in the air breather and runs out. You have to clean the air filter out periodically. You can find the crankcase breather hose and re-route it somewhere else so the oil won't go into the air filter.

Oil leaks caused by crank case ventillation. Need to know how oil / ventilation lines should be routed????


Ok, you have two ventilation hoses on the bike. First, the oil line from the tank goes to the inlet side of the oil pump facing the rear of the bike. The return line comes off the front side of the pump and goes to the oil filter. From there, the return line goes to the return fitting on the oil tank.

Now, there is one crankcase vent hose that comes out of the cam chest behind the front chain sprocket cover and runs to the backside of the oil tank. Then there is another one that comes from the top front of the cam chest and goes to the backside of the breather.

Now, the older Sportsters were notorious for shearing the scavenge gear drive pin. When this happened, the pump would pump all the oil into the engine but the it couldn't pump it back out. The engine would be full of oil, literally. Oil will come out of every seam on the engine. Look in the oil tank and see if it's dry. If so, the oil is all in the engine.

If this turns out to be the case, I can tell you how to replace the drive pin but it's not a job for the faint of heart as I recommend pulling the engine out of the frame. It can be done with the engine in the frame but in my opinion, it's a lot harder.

Harley sportster clutch


it is not uncommon with a lot of bikes, but i would adjust the clutch first and it should stop the drag. adjuster is at bottom of cable on crankcase
