Question about 1982 Yamaha XJ 650
Remove the seat, put the petcock in the any position but "PRI". there is one bolt, remove it and wiggle the tank left and right while pulling backward. The fuel filter is inside of the tank,, just remove the petcock and it comes out with the petcock.

Remove the hoses from petcock...remove seat then you'll see one or two bolts on rear of tank....remove them....pull the tank backwards and then you can lift it off.
