SOURCE: wont start

Go to www.carlsalter.com/motorcycle-manuals.asp You can download a free PDF repair manual there. Normally the manual will have a wiring diagram. Most of the manuals are in English but some are not. There is no way to be sure without doing the download. You can always delete it if in a foreign language. I checked and your manual is there.

SOURCE: 1986 Yamaha Venture Royal 1300 will only start in neutral now.

There is a tiny switch at the clutch lever housing assembly, the wires that are on tht switch may hve been distrubed unknowingly whilst you were refitting the cable.
Not bad too if you can check the switch which has a tiny protusion towards the clutch lever, it may probabley need a little adjusting or cleaning, spray some WD40 to it.
To access it from the lever side , it would be best to remove the clutch lever.
Hope this helps!

All this effort to beat the system --- by pass the safety features --- why don't you fix what you have, return it to functioning status. You have already exceeded the cost of a actual fix.

I have a yamaha virago 250 1996 model. Ok, now. I take the stand off. The engine switch is in Run position. When I press the clutch and put my bike in gear , and try to start it, it does not start...why ?...

The clutch master/lever has a safety switch that tells the bike if the clutch lever is in (no power to rear) or out (power to rear). After almost 30 years this switch may have failed, making the bike think that the clutch is engaged regardless of lever position. If you have a multimeter you can test the switch yourself. Since the bike starts properly in neutral (also a safety feature) then the clutch lever switch is your most likely problem. Your bike might also have a side stand switch like mine. It functions much the same way, if the side stand is down and the bike put in gear it will kill the engine.
