What will cause bluing on front exhaust pipe on 2003 yamaha v-star 1100

Ronald, All stock single wall pipes will blue some time or another. A big cause of Bluing is a badly tuned bike, burning rich or lean putting more heat into pipe.
There are polishes available to remove the Bluing, and some people on forums, they suggest to remove and with high heat paint, put several coats inside of chrome pipes.
Check the attached links, instruction and guides, Good luck

The pipes on my motorcycle are becoming discolored; What causes this? How do I fix it?

Hi Brian, running on the lean side, exhaust and or intake leaks, exhaust valves not seating properly, retarded timing, and extended periods of high speed driving all contribute to exhaust pipe discoloration. This is another reason why heat shields are installed on pipes to cover normal discoloration. You might be able to slow the process down or halt it completely by increasing main jet size until you achieve a light tan color on your spark plugs. The down side of larger main jets is lower MPG. In the future if you ever install new pipes, there is a commercial product out there called Dyno Kote that can be installed on the inside of the new pipes to greatly reduce bluing. There is also a company named Hard Krome that sells a double walled exhaust system that guarantees pipes and mufflers not too blue. Finally, there is a commercial product called Blue-Job that can remove bluing if properly applied, but also removes a micro thin layer of chrome, so only use this product once a while. If you have any other questions about exhaust pipe bluing, or any other issues your Electra Glide may be having you can reach me at For more information about your question, please visit the websites below. Good luck and have nice day.

03 beartraker engine pipe getting cherry red and backfiring it also is only running only at full or partial choke

You need to disassemble and clean your carburetor. Make sure the jets and carb body passageways are clean and clear. Unburned fuel from running the cycle on choke is burning in your exhaust pipe.

My honda shadow sabre the pipes trun blue

Motorcycles come standard with double wall pipes. The inner pipe turns blue and the outer chrome pipe stays nice. In a stock exhaust system you rarely get blued pipes. Unless, you put on your choke, start your bike, answer the phone, and forget your bike is running (or you start driving and just forget to turn off your choke.). Then you will blue your double wall pipe. Bluing is generally caused by too rich of a mixture or fuel burning in the exhaust pipe. If you put on an aftermarket pipe(usually single wall construction) and did not coat the inside of the muffler pipe, the pipe will generally blue the first time you drive the cycle. An old dealer trick is to replace blued aftermarket pipes with new aftermarket pipes (makes the bike look great on the showroom floor). Again if they don't coat the inside of the pipe with exhaust paint or a special coatings usually about $35 the pipes will blue before the customer gets home. If the bluing is mild you could try a product called" Blue Away"that might help, but should not be used regularly as it takes off a little bit of the chrome each time.

I have a 1987 zl 1000 recently had coolant leaking from front water pipe ,number 4 port.took off pipe replaced all 4 o rings drove it 4 days, then noticed coolant leaking from same spot...any ideas?

You did every thing right, just make sure it is clean where the pipe goes in, clean where the o rings sit, the pipes are not bent or damaged, and slip in smoothly and square, and as a last resort install with locktite master gasket on the O rings

Left exhaust pipe is turning a gold colour for approxiamtely 12 inches from the engine

It is normal. One cylinder & pipe are a bit hotter than the other. It is not at all unusual to see one pipe discolored more than the other.

Runing lean

the left three exhaust pipes are bluing at the head and about four inches down the pipes. I have pulled the plugs and those three are white and the other is tan! The guy I bought the bike from said he cleaned the carbs I am wondering if there is a simple adjustment I can make to richen up those three carbs to stop the bluing? Thanks in advance for any help!! By the way those carbs are Hitachi carbs From my experience clean is a relative term, and in this case we have no way of determining how good a job he did without opening the carbs back up. There may still be some blockage there. This is almost guaranteed if the bike sat for a long period of time. You may be able to help it a little by backing out the pilot screws a bit, but maybe not. I have no experience with Hitachis, but likely the pilots will have a cap or plug covering the screws. You'll need to carefully remove these plugs or caps to gain access.,,,
