Question about 2003 Harley Davidson FLHTCUI Electra Glide Ultra Classic

2003 Ultra Classic fuel injected model. Generally runs well, but at times (seems when it's been run hard for an hour at least) I see the volts go way up around 16 or 17; it normally reads 14.5 volts Soon after the volts go way up, the speedometer flickers and shuts down; the red check engine light comes on. Oddly, the bike continues to run more or less normally, except that it won't idle, and if you come to a stop, the engine will quit. I am wondering if this is a regulator problem and when heated, it's failing to shunt excess electricity to ground. Wondering if the speedo shuts down because it's subjected to excess voltage. If you stop for a while, it all goes back to normal. Battery appears OK; it's only a little over a year old. Bike often sits for weeks and fires right up, so there are no apparent battery issues. Ideas?

Your Voltage should never get that high. Anything over 15volts is bad news. Try Testing your Regulator. First do a Bleed Test.
REGULATOR BLEED TEST
Be sure regulator is connected to battery. Unplug the stator connector.
Use a trouble light and clip it to a good ground and the other to the regulator pins, one at a
time. If light comes on regulator is bad.

2003 annv. roadking...starts and runs fine with a full tank of gas...when it gets to half a tank its hard to start and stalls at stops.


If this is the model with a fuel tap you in tank filter is blocked. If you have the injected model you fuel level switch is faulty

Fuel pump


Hi Anonymous, if you have a carburator the fuel filter is on top of the fuel valve. If you are injected, depending on your year and model, the fuel filter is is either connected to the pressure regulator on early models or has it's own housing that the pressure regulator fits into and clips to the top plate of the fuel tank late models. Gas filter on fuel injected models is in the fuel tank attached to the fuel pump. Requires removiing fuel pump from tank to do so.

Ultra classic starts and runs for about two minutes shuts off


Check the vent in your fuel cap. If the vent is stopped up, a vacuum will build up in the tank and no fuel will flow even with a pump.

Our 2003 ultra classic runs good while cool but as it gets hotter it starts missing


Sounds like it's running really rich. Does it smell like it's running rich? If so, you need to take it to a dealer if it's a fuel injected bike. If it's a carburated bike, check the air filter or enricher. Anything any further in the carb requires disassembly of the carburator.
