Sounds like it's time to drain and replace the transmission fluid.
The link below is for the owners manual. It should help with draining and filling the fluids. When the fluid gets too thick, it will make shifting impossible.
Alternately, you may need to take it to a service shop. Their web site also shows a dealer locator.

good luck,

My virago 1100 is stuck in 4th gear and despite the selector mecanism seeming to move ok externally i cannot get it out of gear. what would be the most likely cause and remedy

Hi, Alfred you can try jacking up the rear wheel and rocking the rear wheel back and forth while trying to shift the pedal at the same time an assistant will be necessary to facilitate also for this scenario you will need your service/owners/ manual if you can't find the first and best tool you ever bought for your Yamaha, despair not, for a mere zero $ you can download another one. Bajaj 70cc stuck in first in first gear

Hi, Anonymous for this situation I would call my local dealer or reputable shop's service/parts department and inquire about any possible quick fix, answers, or parts inquiry. If necessary transport your vehicle to the dealer or shop and have a professional technician take it for a test drive, if it is in running condition, and give you a written estimate of repairs and answer any specific questions you may have about your issue. Bike has trouble shifting gears, chain won't move

Chains are intended to move in multiple dimensions while driving the bike or shifting among the gears. YOUR calibrated eyeball can see it while we can't. The Web has lots of advice and resources to well-crafted queries like "front derailleur won't shift" or "rear derailluer won't shift".

"how to (whatever)...." works for many things, too.

Great resource ...

Suzuki burgman 650 won,t change gear

I had the same problem until I found out that when you put the Burgman on it's center stand, it pushes a small round metal pin (spring loaded or something similar) that limits the Burgman to 1st gear only. Some kind of safety feature, I guess. You can see the little switch if you put the bike on it's side-stand, get down on the right hand of the bike and look where the centre stand meets with the body of the bike. My switch was stuck in permanent "on" so I just pulled the pin to it's full extention with a pair of pliars, then cut it with a junior hacksaw.
