SOURCE: where is the oil filter on my yamaha V-star 1100

On the right side of the bike (right side when ou are sitting on it) just above the rear brake lever behind a small circular plate. remove the plate and the oil filter is inside (you will easily see it). Warning---on these bikes you have to drop the front exhaust header and right floor board in order to change the oil filter unless you install a after market oil filter relocation kit. If you plan on changing your own oil it is highly recommended to install this relocation kit.

SOURCE: 2002 Yamaha Vstar 1100 Custom. STARTER Problem

The starter button is used in an open circuit design.
You must press the starter button to "Close" this circuit before the starter will engage. Taking the starter button out of the loop helps support the suspect short. Assuming you kept the starter button wires from touching. :) If not, it is most likely the starter button.

Trace the wires coming from the starter button.
There could be a short circuit. (Same as pushing the starter button). Check along the handle bars and anywhere rubbing could cause a break in the insulation. Try this at night with the lights off.
You may be able to SEE the spark and locate it quickly.

Good luck!

I changed the regulator/rectifier, the stator, and battery but my 2002 Vstar 1100 is still not holding a charge. What to check now?

You need to check if there any bad grounds,
if you have any aftermarket lightining those may couse killing the battery. or have your battery checked or tested.

How to test rectifier.

there are several ways to test a rectifer the quckest way to check if it is working properly is with a voltmeter first check ground resistance one lead to good known ground (battery neg.) the other to rectifer should be 1 ohm or less. Then hook meter to battery and start the bike and check and watch battery voltage should start to increase after a minute or so check at 2000 rpm again increase if it does not check stator if stator passes replace rectifier

Battery keeps going dead

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

To your query, there are 2 major components of the charging system:
  • stator - left side of the engine itself;
  • regulator - right side, below the seat; would be behind the chrome cover below the battery.

A common problem with a VStar is burned, pitted or corroded terminal pins/connectors from the stator to the regulator.

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

Wire connector between stator & voltage reg/rectifier burnt

your voltage/reg. can be tested in a couple different ways check ground res. check res. then revs. bias on diodes you have ac in dc out it sounds like you may have a diode gone bad allowing ac curent to flow causing the wires to get hot
