Question about 1985 Honda GL 1200 Interstate Gold Wing

The plastic connector on the end of the spark plug wire is broken. Can the end of the cable be replaced, or does the whole cable have to be replaced?

You can buy a replacement h/t cap from any good dealer or from ebay

the old one just either unscrews or pulls off

Hi, Bryan and the usual suspects are:
1. Spark plugs in bad condition or partially fouled.
2. Spark plug cables in bad condition and leaking check for spark leakage in the dark.
3. Spark plug gap too close or too wide.
4. Faulty ignition coil, module, and or sensor.
5. Battery nearly discharged.
6. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.

I have no spark on an 86 kx125 upon reassembly.


Hi, Kurt and Tammy some of the following may not apply as this directed mainly towards Harleys what you need is a wiring diagram for your bike which is in the free service manual listed below it sounds like you may have a pinched wire or faulty wire connector or not wired correctly in the ignition circuit, if you have a CKP sensor it needs compression to send the correct signal to the ICM/ECM, make sure both spark plugs are in heads and use a grounded third plug to check for spark or hold spark plug cable close to spark plug in the head. If still not getting spark the usual suspects are:
1. Fouled spark plugs.
2. Discharged battery, check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
3. Loose connection at ignition coil or plug between ignition sensor and module.
4. Spark plug cables in bad condition, shorting / leaking, spark plug cable connections loose.
5. Faulty ignition coil or ignition / electronic module
6. Failed CKP, CMP, or BAS sensor.

Engine stopped running, has no spark.


Hi, Ron if you have a CKP sensor it needs compression to send the correct signal to the ICM/ECM, make sure both spark plugs are in heads and use a grounded third plug to check for spark or hold spark plug cable close to spark plug in the head. If still not getting spark the usual suspects are:
1. Fouled spark plugs.
2. Discharged battery, check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
3. Loose connection at ignition coil or plug between ignition sensor and module.
4. Spark plug cables in bad condition, shorting / leaking, spark plug cable connections loose.
5. Faulty ignition coil or ignition / electronic module

The bike won't start it has spark, replaced the plugs. Still does not start?


Hi, Al and the usual suspects are:
1. Fuel tank empty.
2. Fuel supply valve/petcock turned off.
3. Fouled spark plugs.
4. Engine flooded as a result of overuse of the enricher.
5. Vacuum hose to the fuel supply valve/petcock disconnected, broken, cracked, or pinched.
6. Fuel valve/petcock or filter clogged.
7. Discharged battery, check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
8. Loose or corroded wire connection at the coil, battery or plug between ignition sensor and module.
9. Spark plug cables in bad condition and shorting, cable connections loose, or connected to the wrong cylinders.
10. Ignition timing incorrect due to a faulty ignition coil, ignition module or sensors (MAP, CMP, CKP, O2 and/or BAS).
11. Security alarm needs a reset.

I replaced the ignition coil absolutely correctly. The ignition witch/all wires are ok. There is spark at all on my pulls.Rechecked & there is still no spark. What is wrong pls?

Changing spark plug wires


There are 3 components to each wire, the 2 different end connectors and the wire itself. If the end connectors both have plastic ferrules that unscrew to release the connector from the wire, you can remove the two ends and replace the wire with a piece of new wire, bought by length. If the ends are moulded onto the wire, you have to replace the wire and its end connectors as a single item. In any case you should use 'silicon' cables, these have a greasy looking finish to the cable exterior insulation and resist water and dirt much better.

I have no spark on top cylinder of my 97 rs 250,the coil is ok, plug is ok any ideas?

Won't start


The cable is part of the ignition coil. The 'bare' wire you saw is the spark plug terminal that has a right angle bend in the end that sticks into the cable. You pulled it out trying to remove the cable off the plug, Those kind of connectors fit tightly and it is better to pry up on the bottom of the boot when removing plug wire. Pull the coiled wire connector off the plug, slide the boot back and with pair of pliers, squeeze the connector back into the cable, in a different spot. Slide the boot back and put it back on the plug.
