The coil is like an alternator for motorcycles. I bet that the coil is fried or damaged in some way. Start there and if still no luck you may want to take it to a cycle shop. No spark is a relatively cheap fix so they shouldnt take and arm or leg when paying for the repair. Good luck! Please rate if this helps :)

24 HP BRIGS V TWIN only 1 cylinder is firing what else can I check

No engine numbers to work with so here something to check. Briggs V-twins has set blocking diodes in the kill wire set. If one is shorted or leaky it will cause one coil to be dead if not both.
I just went this very same thing here a few weeks ago. In my case I started out one dead coil for sure installed new coil and still had no fire. Remove the kill wire as I normally do during testing in case a short and the new coil fired fine. Easier to just replace the wire harness then repair it. Out of curiosity I checked out the wiring harness and found one diode shorted and other one leaky.

Could be coil or kill switch... check spark plug wire and contact by pulling off and checking if it will arc when held within 1/4" from a metal part close enough to reach... do this when dark so u can see the arc if and when it happens... if no arc then replace wire, then coil... Good luck

We had issues in the UK with issues like this, they would blacken and soot up the plugs and start to run on on cylinder, there was an internally vented carb rather than the externally vented carb to cure this.

17.5 briggs intek backfiring thru carb wont start have adjusted valves?

Easy things to check, flywheel key, make sure it is not broken, check the coil gap to the flywheel. could be the coil is not advancing. Check, if it has one, the oil sensor by unplugging it. hope this helps.

Trimmer doesn't start

Hello jlmussenden:

>>Here is a Basic Instruction File I am in the Process of Making. Here are some Diagnostic Instructions to Do on the Engine to Locate the Cause/Cure for a Hard/Not Starting Engine. This Does Not Include a Problem with the Valves. If I Suspected the Valves (if this is a 4 Cycle Engine) are Involved, then a Separate File for the Valves will be in this E-mail. This is a File in the Making, so Any Input is Appreciated.
>>1- Check the Spark. If Not Firing, then Replace the Plug.
>>2- If the Plug is Firing, then First, Pour a Small Amount of Gas (1oz) Into the Carburetor Throat with the Throttle at Full. With the Throttle Still at Full, Try to Start the Engine. If the Engine Starts and Quits, then Make Sure the Gas is Flowing to the Carburetor. If the Gas is Flowing, then Remove, Disassemble and Soak the Carburetor Overnight in Carburetor Cleaner (I Use Gunk). I have Found that Most People can Use a Breakdown/IPL and Disassemble the Carburetor Enough for Proper Cleaning. The Welch Plugs Do Not have to be Removed. Then Soak the Carburetor Body and Parts in a 1 Gallon Can of Gunk Carburetor Cleaner Overnight. The Can has a Parts Tray Inside it for the Small Parts. Once the Carburetor and Parts are in the Cleaner, you can Replace the Lid for Safety and to Prevent Accidental Spillage. Then Blow Out the Passages with Compressed Air. Install New Parts if Required.
>>3- If No Fire at the Plug, then Remove the Coil Shut Off Wire from the Kill Switch. Check for Fire. If No Fire, then Remove the Blower Housing and Remove the Ground Wire from the Coil. Check for Fire. If Still No Fire, then the Coil is Bad.
>>* **On Models with Point Set, the Condenser is Bad and the Point Set and Condenser should be Replaced as a Unit. Make Sure the Point Set Plunger is Fully Extended when Setting the Point Set Gap to .020in.
>>** If there was No Response from the Engine When the Gas was Poured Into the Carburetor Throat and the Plug was Firing, then Check the Compression. If the Compression is Good, the Carburetor has Been Soaked and Cleaned and the Plug is Firing, then Check the Flywheel Key. If the Key is Damaged, then the Plug Firing is Incorrect to the Position of the Piston During the Compression (Power Stroke).
>>*** On the OHV Engines (4 Cycle) there is a Compression Release. The Exhaust Valve Clearance has to be Opened to .020in or Greater for the Compression Release Not to Operate; in Order to get a Correct Compression Reading.***
I am New to this Site, so Please Allow me a Little Time to Locate your Next Post on this Site. Im Not Sure How it Works Yet. LOL. Thanks.
Please, Do Not Hesitate, If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem, I am Here if You Require More Assistance.
Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Be Happy. Thanks.

Good Luck

1966 mustang engine cranks but wont start

Guide to starting a dead horse!
1- Spray a little starter fluid down the carbuerator. If it tries to fire, your timing and ignition is probably OK. This could indicate a carb or fuel pump problem.
2- If it doesn't fire, check out the points, condenser, coil, distributor cap and rotor. Look for condensation inside the cap. Check that the high tension wire from the coil to distributor is in good shape and not touching the engine or any brackets, etc.
3- Verify that your timing is correct. You may have a timing train problem (Worn or broken).
4- The distributor may have come loose and changed positions. Check for proper timing.
5- It may be a compression problem. If it has set long enough for the oil that coats the cylinder walls to drain down, you won't have enough compression to allow firing. Check your compression and if this seems to be the case, remove the spark plugs and squirt a little Marvel Mystery oil, or similar light weight oil into each cylinder. When it starts, it will smoke for a few minutes, but that will go away.
Hope this helps and if not, get back to me.
Have a super day!
Ron

Engine wont fire up

Do you have fresh gas in the bike? Try changing the plugs with new ones and check for spark. You can do this by putting the new plugs on the plug wire and grounding it to the head on the engine crank the motor over you should see a bright blue spark. Check one plug at a time. No spark check the ignition wires and coils. As for the oily plugs it could be they are just fouled caused by either flooding the motor while trying to start, bad plugs, week coils, bad gas, poorly adjusted carb's. I would start with the plugs and work my way back to the carbs. Still fouling the plugs after all that start checking the engine, ie compression check ect.
