I have a 2000 Yamaha R1 that has problems starting. a friend looked at it and feels its the timing. I put a new battery, new starting relay, new starter and had a tune up done to it. when the bike gets hot its very difficult to start. to a point it drains my battery. If this is the timing how do we go about setting it? i have looked in the manual and i cant even find the setting for it. any and all help is welcome. thank you Bill

I've had this problem also, had to wait for it to cool after fuelling before it would start, so did a compression test first cold, then another one when engine was normal temp, really low on a couple of cylinders. Stripped the engine to find hairline cracks in the cylinders, couldn't get it repaired, ended up getting another engine

Highly agree with that first answer. I own an r1 and i have the same problem. I have found that the bike floods. Do not twist the throttle at all when startung hot. It will flood then drain battery. Then just wait 15 minutes and ut will start

The thing about electronic ignition is the setting cannot change, as there is no points to wear down and alter the timing.
with the exception of the flywheel key breaking or the cam timing jumping teeth, both highly unlikely occurances, as it wouldnt run cold with either of these

hard to start when hot can be flooding or too rich , or possibly an electrical problem, but if it starts cold OK and runs fine, doesnt cut out or misfire as it gets hot, and the only problem is hard hot start. then fuel mixture is likely.
If it will push\roll start when hot, this may eliminate ignition problems.
recheck the valve clearances.
Make sure the air filter is new.
I also find that some moreys upper cylnder lube in the fuel can help, but cant explain why

Clicking coming from startes relay on honda rvf 400

Sounds like time for a new battery. Yea, I know the lights and the horn work okay. Remember, they do not draw as much current as the starter does.

Clicking noise when starting

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Your description could be any of 2 possibilities:
  • starter relay/solenoid; and/or
  • starter motor.
To determine which, jump the 2 bog terminals of the starter relay when starting the bike; if the motor turns, the relay/solenoid is defective; if the starter motor does not turn, the starter motor is defective (most likely the carbon brushes).

To determine the location of the starter relay/solenoid, follow the clicking sound and would look like the image below.

While the starter motor would look like this
