I don't really understand what information you want. There is only one gear involved with the starter and it simply drops into the starter housing and the starter drive shaft holds it in place. For a diagram, go to Click on OEM parts and go from there. Here is the best drawing of the starter drive that I could find. If there is any other information that you need, please re-post with another question.

1984 harley fxr clutch won't disengage

Hi Anonymous, and the usual suspects are:
1. Clutch controls improperly adjusted.
2. Lubricant level too high in primary chaincase.
3. Primary chain badly misaligned.
4. Clutch discs warpped or rust bound.
5. Insufficient clutch spring tension.

I have an 09 fatboy the starter sounds like it is jamming sounds like it is trying to start a motor already running clicking and grinding the dealer replaced the clutches or but...

The "starter clutch" or "over running" clutch would be my first guess as well but I'd also have checked the gear on the starter jackshaft and the ring gear on the outer clutch drum. Any damage on the latter two parts would be visible and I'm quite sure the mechanic checked for that as well. The mechanic would have to take the starter jackshaft off to get the starter off. I'll include a link to a picture of the starter. The starter clutch is part #37 in the drawing. Now, the starter on your bike is a Nippondenso starter. I've heard these starters make a noise that sounds like the starter jackshaft gear grinding on the ring gear but upon inspection, no damage was found. I think the noise was actually the starter trying to engage but it couldn't and retrying again very rapidly. So rapid that it makes this noise. I finally sprayed the starter motor brushes and the large copper contacts in the solenoid part of the starter with some electronics cleaning spray. The problem stopped but I can't explain why. Remove the end plate from the solenoid part of the starter and get a can of electronics contact cleaner from Radio Shack or an electronic supply store. Spray the large copper contacts in the solenoid with the spray and see if that helps.

My 1984 fxr has no spark i tested the ing. module and it tested fine my friend took my coil off and im no sure what side is pos. and what side is neg. i do know what the right wires are just not what side...

It doesn't matter which terminal the wires go onto. Seems to me the '84 FXR was a Shovelhead powered machine, at least the early year models were. If the coil is located behind the rear cylinder on the left side of the bike, the white wire is usually on the top of the coil. But, like I said, the coil is not a "polarized" coil and it makes no difference really. Just make sure that you get all the wires together like they are supposed to be. The white wire that supplies voltage to the coil usually supplies voltage to the ignition unit as well and they must be on the same terminal. Check your wiring diagram that you got with your ignition unit. If you don't have one, go to their website, visit their "tech" section and download the installation instructions.

I have a 1984 Harley Davidson ,transmission problem:does not shift into 3rd gear after riding 25 miles.Just need some ideas what this problem could be.

Ok, we need to determine whether you have a transmission problem or a clutch problem. Ride the bike until it will no longer shift into third gear. Then stop the bike and turn the engine off. While rocking the bike backwards and forwards, try to shift the transmission though all the gears. If it shifts through the gears there, you have a clutch problem if it will not shift though all the gears, you have a transmission problem.

Please try this and repost with me. I need to know whether your transmission is a five speed or four speed. I seem to remember that those bikes had a four speed that year.

Let me know what you find.

Good luck

You have either a starter relay or the solenoid is stuck. Since I don't know what make the starter is, that's about all I can tell you. Try putiing the bike in high gear and rolling it back and forth and turn the engine just a bit. Sometimes that "unsticks" a starter drive gear. Might work. Good Luck!

Engine will not turn over. Everything else(lights, horn, to on/off and start switch, but none to the starter. What is the next troubleshooting step? Bike is 2000 Suzuki Savage. Thanks

I can suggest a few things. There may be a fuse or fusable link between the start switch & starter. Also there may be a safety swith that is not working properly like: bike in gear, kick stand down. hope this helps.

92 FXR bike will not start or even turn over

the starter solinoid is not working if it has an electric start, try kick starting it, if it won't start check the points or the ingiter coil.
