Chances are that the prior owner pretty well stripped the case threads. The gray aspect of the oil is water emulsified in the oil. The two usual causes are a bad water pump seal or condensation in the gearbox. The metallic part is bothersome. Somewhere, something is wearing badly. The site below has two factory service manuals available for free download. One is 2003 the other doesn't say the year. Either should be able to answer recommended oil quantity and oil type. Consider changing filters also. Please rate my answer. Thanks! 1998 KTM 250 exc. Loosened oil level bolt and wont - tombones49_23.gif

I have a ktm 250 exc 2001. It had a full engine rebuild in december and i have been using it day to day to go to work with the odd green land fun. last week it started putting oil out from some where up...

The gray color(if it's milky) may be water and may mean that your water pump seals are leaking. Check your radiator level, it should tell you. Be sure to replace both and check the waterpump shaft for corrosion in the seal area. If there is, replace the shaft, too, or the problem will occur again.

If you don't feel that you have water in the oil, it may be that your right crank seal is blown. This will pressurise the clutch and tranny area and likely blow oil some out of any place it can on the right side. If this is the case, the engine will have to be pulled and completely disassembled to replace your crank seals and possibly the main crank bearings.

Ktm output shaft oil seal

if you are lucky there is a clip behind the front sprocket remove both then pop the seal out drain gear box oil first though. if not which i think is most probable the engine will need splitting if you are good with spanners it is quite easy being a 2 stroke .in brief remove engine remove bore and carb in one lump remove sprocket gear lever split g-box .seal up push old seal out, from outside in, fit new then reverse prosses. a good manual will help.

2009 KTM 250 exc-f excessive oil use, no apparent oil leaks or blue smoke

It is normal for these bikes to use some oil. A typical, maintained 250 4 stroke will use a pint of oil or more in one day of riding - depending on a lot of variables, of course. Oil consumption on these four strokes is quite typical.
