Question about 2007 Aprilia Scarabeo 125

1 Answer

The scooter is hard to start in the spring after an inactive winter. This spring it would not turn over let alone, start. I have replaced the battery and added a float charger. The engine turns over now, but still will not start. The spark plug appears to be wet, but I can't see any evidence of spark on the plug when turning the engine over and the plug grounded to the chassis. Nor can I see evidence of spark when I I try to provide a small gap from the spark plug wire to the chassis. I'm sort of handy, but definitely not a motorcycle mechanic. What now?

John, I purchased a spark tester and found the scooter had a very weak spark - barely made the neon tube glow. I ordered and finally received the replacement Transducer/CDI unit and installed it. If I spray starter fluid into the cylinder and hook up the spark tester, I can get the scooter to start and the spark shows much stronger. Thanks for the guidance there - I was a bit worried as it cost me $150 for the replacement CDI and I wasn't sure that was the problem.

Can you damage a CDI type spark unit by checking spark with a gap - like with an old Briggs & Stratton lawn mower engine?

However, the scooter now does not appear to be getting fuel. Once the starter fluid runs out, the engine stalls.

I've heard about resin buildup in the fuel when you don't use the scooter for a while. I've drained the fuel tank and checked the fuel filter. No obvious issues. All the fuel lines are clamped with a permanent clamp so I can't easily disconnect lines and check for fuel. Suspect that fuel pump is not working, but can't even find the fuel pump. Any ideas? Any liquid fuel cleaners that would eliminate the gum/resin question?

I allways start at the begining with this type of problem

when you charged the battery did you check to see if there is 12 volts?
have you checked that all the wires are attched to the battery?
have you replaced the spark plug?
checked the fuse should be just above the battery will be inside a clear plastic cover
put a meter on the battery and try and start the bike and see if there is a drain to earth

if none of these cures the problem then check the cdi unit trace the h.t lead from the spark plug to the unit maybe you will have to remove the side plastic to get to it there will be a plug with 2 wires inside it put a meter on them and see if there is voltage if there is then the cdi unit is fault

hope this helps

The scooter is actually a 100 4T. The menu selections did not allow for this choice.

I got a new plug but there is no spark. I tested by tying a wire from the plug body to the scooter chassis and while trying to start the scooter, looking for spark in the plug gap. Of course, the H.T. lead was tied to the normal place on the plug.

There are two electrical devices under the foot rest area; one has the H.T. lead tied to it and is what you referred to as the CDI unit or I see it referred to as the Digital Transducer on various wiring diagrams I find on the web. This has numbers; 29 07 402010 or AC22 639829 and has a 4 wire electrical connector. Pin 1 ties to chassis (blue - batt (-)), Pin 2 is Brown unknown connection, Pin 3 is White with Red stripe (unknown) and Pin 4 (Yellow) ties to pin 4 of the other electrical device (Voltage Regulator?)

The Voltage Regulator (?) also has a 4 wire connector. Part number 343487 or 27 07 9693 82. Pin 1 is green (unknown connection) Pin 2 is blue and ties to batt (-), Pin 3 is Red and ties to batt(+) through the ignition switch (13.3 Vdc is observed WRT chassis) Pin 4 is the Yellow signal that ties to the CDI pin 4. I see no voltage with a meter referenced to chassis on the yellow wire when trying to start the scooter (AC or DC).

Since the connectors have a different number of wires than was expected and since the model is different from what was assumed, I wasn't certain the previous diagnosis was still appropriate.

Per previous instruction, I would tend to think the CDT (Digital Transducer) part would be the next thing to replace. Is that correct or are there other steps or measurements that should be done first?

    hiya doug

i think you maybe on the right line with this fault the onlt other thing i would test is the an relays that you can find there is one under the handle bars but i would say from the info that you have given that the cdt is faulty

good luck with the reapir and let me know when its repaired

John, One more question before I spring for the new CDI unit.

INFO: The CDI connector, pin 4 (yellow) ties to the Voltage Regulator and shows about 7.7 VAC when trying to start. Pin 3 (White with Red stripe) appears to tie to the RUN/NO RUN switch on the Right Handlebar and shows about 12 VDC when the switch is in run and 0 VDC when the switch is in NO RUN. Therefore, I wonder about Pin 2 (brown). I suspect this may run to a flywheel sensor that initiates a spark when the flywheel is in a certain position.

Question: If I am right, is the flywheel sensor susceptible to damage and is it a likely root cause for the lack of spark?

    Thanks, Doug

  • john morgans Apr 03, 2011

its unlikely that the sensor has gone o/c but the pads on the mag could be rusted up sorry should have thought of that one just give them a light rub with some sandpaper just to get the worst of them to check the sensor you can run a meter on it when you try to start the bike that will to you if its working also put the meter on continuse and see if the sensor is short circuit
while you are there check the wiring if its as you say from the cdi to the sensor it makes sense to check the wire is good can do that with the meter

John, I purchased a spark tester and confirmed that the spark was very weak – barely made the neon test tube glow.

I then purchased and installed the new CDI/Transducer unit. If I spray starter fluid into the cylinder, reinstall the spark plug and connect the in-line spark tester, I both see good spark and the engine will run until the starter fluid is consumed. That made me happy because it said that the spark problem was fixed and the $150 I spent of the new CDI/Transducer unit was justified. Thanks for the help there.

However, I now seem to have a fuel problem. I didn’t know that you should drain the fuel tank over the winter and that can lead to resin/gum buildup that prevents the fuel from flowing correctly. I’ve drained the tank and checked the fuel filter; which looks ok. However, the gas line hoses are all permanently clamped so I can’t check for proper fuel flow. Is there something like Chevron Techron Fuel System Cleaner that can resolve this sort of problem?

I also worry about the fuel pump, but I can’t even find one on the scooter. The tech manuals imply there is one, but I’m not sure whether the tech manual is only talking about the Scarabeo 50 or whether it includes the Scarabeo 100 4T that I own. Any thoughts there.

Hi, Michael and the usual suspects are:
1. Spark plugs in bad condition or have an improper gap or are partially fouled.
2. Spark plug cables in bad condition.
3. Battery damaged or nearly discharged, should have 12.5 volts.
4. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
5. Throttle controls not adjusted correctly.

My scooter starts runs good then dies

Replace the battery, after sometime the battery starts to lose it's initial capacity.

For battery replacement go to Goped.com, select your scooter model, then click replacement parts and find the batteries on the part list.

My Vespa LX50 won't start. Some days I've been trying for an hour and nothing happens, I've tried kickstart and start button and nothing. I have been to 3 workshops and they cannot identify the problem....

Hi,

I have had the same problem with my LX 50. You have to make sure you turn it on often to keep it in good shape. I didn't turn it on for a long time during the winter and it didn't wanna start in the spring. I bought a fluid that you put in the gas tank that cleans off the insides when the gasoline runs through. I have to double check what fluid it was. But it worked and now it turns on.

Schwin scooter not running properly

If the battery is old its likely that it needs to be replaced. Also, if batteries sit in the cold in the winter or are exposed to high heat they can be damaged. Try checking out http://www.batteryinternational.com/electric-scooter-batteries.html for a scooter replacement battery.

Can't get Keeway ARN to start

If you did not prep the bike for winter storage with Sta-Bil in your gas you might have some clogged carb problems You say this is a scooter but the description at top calls it a motorcycle. If it's a scoot then your engine and carb are underneath all that plastic your sittin' on.If it's a motorcycle your carb is right behind the engine between ur legs. It has a rubber gas line connected to it. Get some starter fluid from your local auto parts store and spray a short burst into the air cleaner and then hit the starter button. It should start but if it won't sit there and idle youv'e got a plugged card idle jet...time for a mechanic....next year prep the bike and disconnect the battery and you won't have to buy a new one....Good Luck !!
