If the valves "rock" at TDC, the piston is at TDC EXHAUST, not TDC COMPRESSION. Chances are the engine is flooded. Install a fresh spark plug and go easy on twisting the throttle when starting the bike. Be sure the battery is in good condition. Push the kick lever to just past TDC compression then give a strong kick. Don't try to kick start with the piston going upward on the compression stroke. Be sure the air cleaner is not dirty and you have good gas. Please rate my answer. Thanks!

is there anymore things to check please .. tried bumpstarting it but to no availe the back wheel locks up if not enough weight on the bike

  • tombones Mar 27, 2011

When you bump start, have the bike in 3rd or 4th gear. That will lessen the wheel lock up. The valve being too tight makes me wonder if the prior owner did a top end job and didn't get the cam timing right. Check the plug, is there spark?

  • tombones Mar 28, 2011

As mentioned before, install a fresh spark plug if you haven't already. Next, get a can of spray starting fluid and give a good shot into the air cleaner. Now try starting it.

tried new plug ... and quick start but just back fired ... no start tried hard but to no avail ! ah well

  • tombones Mar 28, 2011

The following web site says they have a free download of your bikes service manual.
I suggest you do the download then look to see the photos of the cam gear relative to timing marks on the gear. If the cam is out of position the bike will never start. Since the valve was way off in it's setting, obviously a prior owner has been tinkering with the top end.

Sounds just like what my TE410 did. On my bike it was the flywheel magnets came loose. I would kick and kick and every now and then it would back fire.

But if it sparks then it's a fuel problem. You need to pull your carby off and unscrew the bottom half from the top, 1st sign of a needle stuck inside the seat is a dry carby There you'll find the float, push the float up and down and see if the needle above the float slides up and down from the seat, If the needle stays up then it's stuck and NOT letting the fuel into the carby, Just pull it down with your fingers to loosen it up..I hope this helps.... I have 03 kawasaki praire 650 v-twin its backfiring through front carb and wont run whats wrong

Backfiring through a carb is indicative of over advanced ignition. The spark is firing the fuel too early and exploding through the carburettor, instead of firing the piston over Top Dead Centre (TDC).

Another possibility is a damaged valve, do a compression test and get the timing checked.

I bought a 1984 chevy 350 engine from a salvage yard that ran but never ran right. Come to find out it had a bad exhaust valve. we took the head off blew it out and replaced the valve and put the head back...

If you have a weak spark it will not start since under compression it takes a much stronger spark to jump the gap as compared to a spark in normal air pressure. Try a good known working coil.

Just rebuilt a husqvarna 372. New crank bearings, seals, all gaskets. Has good spark and gas. Why wont it fire?

If there is a good spark and there is good fuel at the plug the only reason it wont fire or do somthing is if the ignition timing is out, this can happen if the alloy flywheel key has sheard, remove the flywheel and check, unfortunatly if the key has gone it is a new flywheel.

Did a top end job put it all back to gether and nothing. i went back checked timing, valve shims , fuel its getiing spark its gott compression but still wont run. Could that mean the cdi is bad?

Good spark? = CDI ok. Check the timing with a timng light. aim it down the inspection hole to see the "T" mark on the fly wheel. if it flashes, and you can't see the 'T' , then your timing is off. If so, check the flywheel position. At top dead center, a few things should be true. 1) your intake and exhasut valves are shut, with .006 clearance on intake, and .010 clearance on exhaust. 2) The "T" mark on the flywheel should be visible and aligned with the notch on the inspection hole. IF your timing is ok, and your spark is good then try spraying starting fluid into the carb. if it fires up when you spray, then you have fuel delivery issues. check float height and check bowl by opening drain screw a bit to see if fuel comes out. if no fuel, then examine float needle, tank petcock, and float height.

OK i have a 1991 ford ranger 3.0 i have put the engine on top dead center (i believe) i put a paper towel in number one piston and when i turn the engine over it pushes it out i stop turning it over i...

just because the piston comes to the top does not mean its on compression stroke. the piston comes to the top on the exhaust stroke aswell !! if ur out by a single tooth it wont start. take of ther timing belt cover and the 'rocker cover'. ensure no 1 at top dead centre making sure valves 1 and 2 are 'rocking'. both valves must be shut(as in up not down) for a compression stroke !! refit ur distributor ensuring its perfectly on no 1. rebuild and bobs ur uncle. ps u may have choked out ur plugs starting up like u did, make sure they are clean. good luck.

17.5 briggs intek backfiring thru carb wont start have adjusted valves?

Easy things to check, flywheel key, make sure it is not broken, check the coil gap to the flywheel. could be the coil is not advancing. Check, if it has one, the oil sensor by unplugging it. hope this helps.

My husqvarna 50rancher chainsaw wont start

Check your fuel make sure it is new fuel. Check to make sure that you have spark. Even replace the plug, for the price of 3dollars it is not a bad deal. If those do not work then you are going to have to check your flywheel and your armatur those are the items that would prevent you from firing since Huska makes a excellent carb you do not need to mess with it at all.
