If your handy working on stuff you can find the problem. You need a test light and a volt OHM meter, and basic understanding on how to use both or collect a friend that knows some and you'all can figure it out together. First you need to remove the seat and the gas tank so you can get to the wiring and the battery. Realize that if the battery is low the engine cranking might be that the voltage is too low to let the inghtion come on. First check the battery as it should be 12.6 volts for a charged battery, if the battery is lower than 12 volts as it's cranking it could be below 9 volts and it won't spark, as the voltage is too low. If the voltage is low then you could jump start the bike with your car and with the car running the voltage will be even higher ( 14.5 volts ) and the bike should crank and spark if it's OK and if the plugs are in and thier not too wet from cranking it with the spark off, it'll fire up and run. If this doesn't happen. and theirs still no spark then your looking for real problems. Remember if you try something I tell you and you find something you need to ask me about all you have to do is add a comment and I'll be contacted by email that you need my help and I'll reply with a continued answer to your problem. I answer these problems cause I like to and helping you keeps me thinking and improving the answers I give so I want to help you till your running, and running right. Batteries go down as they sit and their still good but need to be charged up. It's wisest to charge the battery with a battery charger as charging the battery by running the engine puts undue strain on the charging system and could possibly wreak the charging system. I put a new battery in my bike every year as it's cheap insurance against charging and ingation system problems. Your battery as new as it is may only need to be charged or the warrentee may replace it. Lets say this is'nt the problem and with good voltage you still don't have aspark. You need both plug wires connected to a plug or the head or the spark will feed back the coil and possibly blown the ingition module. Bike bandit shows a picture of it but they don't have it for resale. You need to check the power wire to the coil to see if it's hot with the key on. anytime the key is on. the coil can be shorted but it's not likly as it ran the last time you ran it and they usally fail as it's running. ( overheat) If the wire is'nt the same as battery voltage ( measure with the voltmeter) then the wire is bad or the ingtion switch is bad or dirty or a blown fuse. If in doubt check all the fuses ( with the test light) a fuse can look good and be bad. they can look bad and they usally are. If you don't have a volt meter and you want to ride an old Harley you'll need a test light and volt mater and even the ones you get at a discount store are good enough to find the lack of power. any 12 volt ligh that lights as connected to the battery will work it's just the ones you can but at the store are so much easier to use. if you find something and need to ask somemore just ask buy adding a comment and i'll come back and help you somemore. Hello str... since most of those components are new and you indicate that the bike ran fine last year, I suspect that you have a corrosion issue, a poor ground, or a dead battery; or a bad ignition module.

Begin by charging up the battery. Then inspect each of the connections and if suspect at all, clean with some emery cloth and then reconnect.

If these routing maintenance steps do not solve your problem go to this link

78 sportster with no spark. checked coil, wires leading to and from, new spark plugs, wires, points, condenser.

You are missing something here. If you have check all above then you must have a spark. Battery maybe, only joking. Use a voltmeter to confirm primary circuit. Check for 12 volts at the points when open (bike turned on).Check for 0 volts when points closed. Check both sides of primary side of ignition coil, one should be 12 volts when points are open or closed, and the other connect should be 12 volts when points open and 0 volts when points closed. To allow for losses in wiring ) 0 volts may be up to .5 or there abouts but not 2 or higher. If this is the case, you have a damaged wire. If all o/k then coil is the problem. simplest way to check is by replacement as static resistance checks can be misleading. Coil could be arcing internally.

I have a 2000 harley davison sporster custom i have changed the spark plugs i have no spark at all the coil is new and the module is new but someone cut my turn single wires and put in new turn singles now...

Hi Altonbaker81, the CKP sensor needs compression to send correct signal to the ICM/ECM, make sure both spark plugs are in heads and use a grounded third plug to check for spark or hold spark plug cable close to spark plug in head. If still not getting spark the usual suspects are:
1. Fouled spark plugs.
2. Battery voltage below 8.7 volts, loose or broken battery cables especially ground cable to frame.
3. Loose connection at ignition coil or plug between ignition sensor and module.
4. Spark plug cables in bad condition, shorting / leaking, spark plug cable connections loose.
5. Faulty ignition coil or ignition / electronic module
6. Failed CKP, CMP, MAP or BAS sensor.
7. Faulty ignition switch.
8. Security alarm failing to disarm.

1979 xlch sportster....getting power to everything but no spark out of coil. brand new coil and tested to be good. anything helps. this bike has kickstart only and has dyna s electronic ignition. plz help

Take the plugs out of the heads, put them back in the wires, and lay the plugs on the heads so that they have a good ground. Turn the ignition on and then turn it back off. When you turn the ignition switch off, you should see a spark. If you do, then something is wrong with the ignition unit. If you do not see a spark, you have a bad coil or a wiring problem. You can also do this test by "hot wiring" the coil. Any tine you put 12 volts to the coil then stop it, you should get a spark.

Good luck

1999 sportster sport will turn over but will not start changed signal lights on it and will not start act like no fire but havent checked yet was wondering if there was a fuse block for this model

Yes there is a fuse blow or a circuit breaker block on the bike. It's either under the seat or behind the triangular plate on the left side of the bike. Usually, the ignition circuit in on a different circuit from the lights.

Take a test light or a Volt Ohm meter and check for voltage on the coil. To test the coil, unplug a spark plug wire and insert another spark plug in it. Make sure the plug is grounded to the engine. Turn the ignition switch on and then back off. The spark plug should spark once when you turn the switch off. If not, you either don't have power to the coil, or the coil is bad.

To further test the coil, disconnect all wires from the coil and connect a DVOM (digital volt ohm meter) across the coil. Connect one lead from the meter to one of the small primary terminals and the other meter lead to the other primary terminal. Put the meter's function switch in OHMS, R x 1 scale. You should read 2 to 3 ohms, no more or less.

Good Luck

I have an 03 sportster 883 that after starting acts like its not getting any power from the throttle. It will go up to about 10mph very slowly then you can shift to the next gear and it sounds like is...

if it has a diaphram carb the dia.could be split
u may have a missfire-coil, leads or spark plugs may be braking down{run the engine in the dark u may then see sparks from the components] or water in the petrol.

Yamaha yz125 wont start...

you should try cleaning your carb i dont know how often you clean your air filter but if you havn't done that you should do it also.after you do that turn the gas on lean it over till gas runs out the over flow and give it choke no gas and try kicking it should be able to just loosen up the clamps on each side of the carb and twist it so you can get to the float bowl, unscrew the four screws and blow it out with a air nossle you can try that before you go through the troubles of taking it off to clean it.
