SOURCE: 2006 Yamaha Vstar custom starter issue

The one way clutch that engages the starter motor to the flywheel is chattered or damaged and needs to be replaced. The starter motor turns a small gear that is connected to a large gear by a small chain. On the side of the big gear is a smooth machined surface that the one way clutch grabs when the starter is engaged. The surface is chattered and the three grabber rollers wont jam or grab on the surface unless it is smooth therefore the starter spins but the motor does not. You will probably have to replace the large gear and possibly the three rollers also.

Are you saying you missed an oil change, and they won't fix the starter problem? Sounds like I would find another place to take the bike and see if they will fix it under warranty.

SOURCE: 2002 Yamaha Vstar 1100 Custom. STARTER Problem

The starter button is used in an open circuit design.
You must press the starter button to "Close" this circuit before the starter will engage. Taking the starter button out of the loop helps support the suspect short. Assuming you kept the starter button wires from touching. :) If not, it is most likely the starter button.

Trace the wires coming from the starter button.
There could be a short circuit. (Same as pushing the starter button). Check along the handle bars and anywhere rubbing could cause a break in the insulation. Try this at night with the lights off.
You may be able to SEE the spark and locate it quickly.

Good luck!

What would cause a 2005 vstar classic 1100 not start when the starter is engaged and why would it sound as if the engine lost its compression and how would i go about finding out what the proublem is

Hi, Anonymous the starter drive/Bendix/clutch is a mechanical gear driven component that engages the clutch pack ring gear to turn over the engine. It has an internal mechanism that allows the gear to turn in one direction and once the engine starts allows the drive gear to free spin. If gear free spins in both directions then the drive gear has failed, it is not serviceable and needs to be replaced. My 2002 yamaha vstar 1100 classic started and ran fine. now the starter just spins. it wont turn the engine over to start it. i already changed the battery. what could be the problem?

The one way clutch inside the motor is slipping. On the back side flywheel is a one way clutch that grabs the starter gear when the starter motor spins. It is designed to let go of the gear once the motor fires up. If the mating surface of the one way clutch and the starter gear becomes rough or chattered, it will no longer grab and turn the motor over. To repair this you will have to take off the crankcase cover and pull off the fly wheel to replace the one way clutch and the starter gear.

2005 1100 vstar wont start. srarter working fine. pistons & valves are not moving at all ran perfectly the day before. 8500 miles. help me

If the bike ran well the day before, and nothing strange like no oil in the crankcase is going on, then the bike is likely to be fine. What isn't fine is the starter. The starter motor may be running fine but if the starter gear does not engage then the pistons are not going to move. It is time to call the dealer and talk with them as to repair or replacement cost. If replaced, keep the old starter for parts.

You may also want to check out a starter from a wrecked bike. Google " motorcycle salvage yamaha ". Chances are you can get a good starter for cheap.

Please rate this solution. Thanks! :)
