Have fitted aLRA long raing fuel tank to my BT 50 2013 Mazda and I were told that my fuel gauge wouldent work till I use about 70 litters as then the feul gauge will read as usual, is still reading.


I would expect that your gauge would read "full" until such time that the float in the tank begins to fall - just as you indicated in the follow up to your question.

Without knowing the shape of the tank and orientation of the float in the tank, it is impossible to really discuss it any further. Just make sure your wiring is made up correctly, and wait.

You should be able to calculate the approximate remaining fuel based on the distance you've traveled to prevent running out of fuel.

The fuel gauge on my 01 caravan 2.4l reads full when running, and only reads 1/4 when off, any ideas what it could be?


Many cars do this to discourage gas theft. If the car fuel gauge only shows 1/4 full, a potential thief may not bother to steal 2 or 3 gallons of gas. This is very normal.

If the gauge is stuck on full and you are sure the tank isn't full, you have a sensor sending wrong information to the dash gauge. Most cars now have a single fuel pump and sending unit that can be replaced by a mechanic.

A constantly full fuel gauge is usually caused by a short circuit on the sensor wire. Check the wiring by isolating the wire as near as possible to the fuel gauge. Measure with an Ohm meter between the wire and earth, the reading should be more than 10 and less than about 200k. A short is indicated by a reading of around 0 Ohms, depending on the accuracy of your meter.
A second possibility is the sender unit in the fuel tank which could be faulty, and then finally, and only finally, the head gauge could be faulty.

I have a 07 flhx and the fuel gauge reads full all time


When the ignition switch is ON the fuel gauge is connected to 12 VDC, current flows through the gauge and the variable resistor in the fuel gauge sending unit to ground. The sending unit float controls the amount of resistance in the variable resistor. Malfunctioning fuel gauges may be the result of a fuel gauge sender or a fuel gauge not being properly grounded OR there may be a defect in the fuel gauge sender or in the fuel gauge itself OR there may be an open circuit caused by a loose or disconnected connection or a broken wire between the ignition switch to the fuel gauge.



A suspect fuel gauge system can be tested by FIRST removing the gauge and grounding the Y/W wire of the fuel gauge sender located at the bottom of the gauge, turning the ignition switch ON at which point the fuel gauge must indicate FULL. And if it does so then the fuel gauge is functioning correctly.And if it does not read FULL then get a multimeter set to the RX1 scale and measure the resistance of the sending unit by placing one of the meter probes on the Y/W wire and the other probe on a good ground. THEN for FLHT/C/U, FLTR if thefuel tank is full the meter reading should be 7-14 ohms and if the tank is empty the meter resistance reading should be 74-95 ohms resistance and a half full tank meter resistance reading will be approximately 30-38 ohms. For FLHR/C/S if the fuel tank isfull, the meter resistance reading should be 27-40 ohms, if the tank is empty 240-264 ohms and if half full approximately 97-118 ohms. FOR ALL MODELS if there is a very highmeter resistance or infinity reading the sender may be "open" or not grounded. In this case check to see if the sender and fuel tank are grounded by placing one of the ohmmeter probes on the flange of the sender and the other probe on crankcase and if the ground is good the meter must indicate one ohm or less and if the reading is one ohm or less the sender is defective and requires replacement and if a higher resistance reading is obtained you will need to check for a poor ground wire. THENyou can check the voltage to the O/W (+) wire and the BK (-) wire of the fuel gauge connector if the gauge did not indicate FULL and the correct reading will depend on the source voltage and the level of fuel in the tank or the position of the sender float arm on the variable resistor etc. If there is NO battery voltage present there may be a broken, highly corroded or disconnected power wire. If you cannot find a problem using the above testingreplace the gauge itself.

hi it can really only be two things, first is the fuel sender on the pump inside the tank it could be stuffed or sticking causing a false reading, second it can also be a faulty fuel gauge on the dash.

i have a 1990 nissan pathfinder with fuel gauge reading problems,at 1/4 tank the gauge reads full,and at other times it reads the actual quanity any ideas/

Most likely it a bad fuel level sensor on you fuel pump. You will have to replace the fuel pump as that is the only way to replace the sensor for you fuel gauge. The sensor is built into the fuel pump. The contacts on the sensor become corroded over time and cause the sensor to malfunction causing your fuel gauge to read full all the time. I have a 2001 Montana extended version that had the same problem. In order to know when I needed to fill the tank, I would completely fill it each time I put fuel in and reset my trip odometer. I would go 400 miles on the tank before I would refuel until we were able to replace the fuel pump.

It is more likely to be the fuel guage sender which is faulty.

This is a normal concern.
The instrument cluster uses 4 different operating modes to calculate the fuel level:
Anti-slosh (default mode)
Key OFF fueling
Key ON fueling
Recovery
After a fuel fill up, the time for the fuel gauge to move from empty (E) to full (F) ranges from 2 seconds to 55 minutes depending on which operating mode the fuel gauge is in.
The default fuel gauge mode is called the anti-slosh mode. To prevent fuel gauge changes from fuel slosh (gauge instability due to changes in fuel sender readings caused by fuel moving around in the tank), the fuel gauge takes approximately 55 minutes to go from empty (E) to full (F).
The key OFF fueling mode (2 seconds to read empty [E] to full [F]) requires 3 conditions be met:
The key must be in the OFF position throughout the entire refueling of the vehicle.
At least 15% of the vehicle's fuel capacity must be added to the fuel tank.
The instrument cluster must receive a valid key ON fuel sender reading within 1 second of the key being put into the RUN position. The key ON sample readings are considered valid if the fuel sender reading is between 15 ohms ± 2 ohms and 160 ohms ± 4 ohms.
If these conditions are not met, the fuel gauge stays in the anti-slosh mode, which results in a slow to read full (F) event.
The key ON fueling mode (approximately 90 seconds to read empty [E] to full [F]) requires 3 conditions be met:
The transmission is in PARK (P).
The key is in the RUN position.
At least 15% of the vehicle's fuel capacity must be added to the fuel tank.
In key ON fueling mode, a 30-second timer activates after the transmission is put into the PARK (P) position (automatic transmissions). When the 30-second time has elapsed and at least 15% of the vehicle's fuel capacity has been added, the fuel gauge response time is 90 seconds to read from empty (E) to full (F). When the transmission is shifted out of PARK (P), the fuel gauge strategy reverts to the anti-slosh mode. The key on refueling mode prevents slow to read full events from happening if the customer refuels the vehicle with the key in the RUN position.
Recovery mode is incorporated into the instrument cluster strategy to recover from a missing fuel level input during a refueling event. Missing fuel level inputs result from intermittent opens in the fuel sender or its circuits. Recovery mode (empty [E] to full [F] approximately 20 minutes) is initiated when the following 2 conditions are met:
The instrument cluster is in the anti-slosh (default) mode.
The actual fuel level in the tank is greater than what is being displayed by the fuel gauge
