Question about Yamaha V Star Classic Motorcycles

I have a whistle noise, not sure what it is. maybe air through air filter ,or valves,or normal.bike only has 3,000 miles.I bought it thatway with the noise.

Regrettably, a small oil leak from the air cleaner assembly is "normal". This is because the EPA requires all crankcase emissions to be routed to the intake system so that it can be burned in the engine. The result is that oil mist in the crankcase vented condenses in the air cleaner and eventually drips out.

The crankcase vent for your Sporty is in the heads. If you noticed, there are two large bolts that are hollow holding the air filter backing plate on. The crankcase vents into the air cleaner assembly through these two bolts. There is an "unbrella valve" in the rocker box center section that allows the air to flow one way but not the other. There are baffles in this area to keep the oil mist to a minimum but still there is some in the air coming out of the engine.

There are a few kits available on the aftermarket for re-routing this crankcase vent. You can direct the exit anywhere you wish using one of these kits. Most people just route the hose down and exit it under the bike just in front of the rear wheel.

When adding oil to your bike, only add the oil when the engine is hot. On your dipstick, you have two marks. The upper mark represents "FULL HOT" while the lower mark represents 'FULL COLD", Do not overfill. Check the level with the bike on the side stand.

Without being able to stand next to the machine and listen it would be very hard to say what the noise is. Valves are generally easy to adjust and if loud have a high pitched tick sound. Cam chain adjusters generally self adjust and are reasonably quiet. If the automatic adjuster goes bad it will generally make a clatter sound or a loud clack. One thing you have not considered, if the the exhaust gaskets in the head go bad or leak air, they can also produce a loud ticking sound. You often hear this sound in older V8 engines. It sounds like a lifter is bouncing around inside the motor but the sound is caused by a blown gasket between the head and exhaust manifold. If you experience some popping/backfiring during deceleration try replacing your exhaust o-rings in the heads. This may solve both problems. If the problem is internal to the cylinder you may need to change a bad cam chain adjuster. As always start with the cheaper fixes and work your way up. Adjust valves and cam chain tensioner if not self adjusting, replace the exhaust gaskets next, and if that does not fix it, replace the cam chain tensioner. Hope this helps.

if it sounds like it is coming from carb it may have a stuck valve. make sure air filter is clean and mounted to carb tightly.

Whistle noise indicates a major vacuum leak. Maybe something loose in the intake system. Maybe a vacuum hose disconnected. Will explain lose of power also.

How often do u change oil and spark plugh


Good rule of thumb, about every 3,000 miles for oil. Every third oil change for the spark plug. Air filter and Fuel filter usually goes with. Remember though your ridding habbits have a lot to do with maintanace though. If you ride your bike hard, and like the canyons. Then shrink the intervals by 1,000 miles or every once a month for oil. The spark plugs, and filters are every other oil change.

Clacking noise at different engine idles on my Yamaha V Star


Lots of bikes make a clacking in the transmission , especially when cold at idle. Basically the engine accelerates and decelerates between each piston firing, and you hear the backlash in the gears slapping back and forth. Without hearing it I can't say for sure, but find someone else with a similar bike and see if it sounds the same.

WHISTLING BELOW TURBO


Its surely not turbo, its is somewhere a hole or leak in turbo air filter housing or air inlet pipe that is making noises when turbo sucks air. check the air pipes wheather they are fitted correctly. Take a keen look at air hose and close any hole with silver tape check the hose is fitted correctly in Turbo air filter housing (if not then it makes whistling noise when air is being sucked by turbo) . Clean all air filters and then give it a go.

Gas leak


All gas tanks have a vent to let air in to replace the gas as you use it, ussually in the cap. Most have a one-way valve so air can get in but gas can't get out, you found out why when the bike went horizontal. But if the gas gets hot, it builds a bit of pressure and your vent is leaking slightly. That's the whistle you hear and why the fuel spilled. A new cap should fix it.

Engine noise


and it is brand new only 75 miles on it when i got it. At the 600 mile mark i did the valve adjustment and changed the oil, after another 100-150 miles, the normal ticking that you get from the motor started getting louder. I checked the adjustment on the valves again, they were good to go, and after another 50 miles or so i changed the oil again to make sure there were no metal flakes in the oil, which there werent. Do the 250's just get a little noisier as tehy break in? It seems to me its coming from the bottom end. It has automatic cam chain tensioners, so i dont think its that, and i have checked to make sure everything is tight like it should be. The ticking does go along with engine speed, and at 55-60 mph you can just barely hear it over the wind and road noise. I have worked on cars for several years, and i know some engines are just normally loud or ticky, but this is my first bike that i have ever really messed with. This normal for this bike? ,i had a 82 yamaha 650 and with 40,000 miles it was the quitest bike i ever had. i realize that doesnt really compare to ur bike but i wouldnt expect an engine to be louder after that few a miles. i would really suggest finding a forum especially for your bike (theres bound to be one) and asking around, its really a bike to bike difference ,,,
