If the motor seems like it is idling roughly/misfiring try putting on a set of new spark plug caps on. You can purchase NGK brand for about $5 each ($20). I drove my first used GL1000 home from the dealership and was regretting the purchase it was running so terribly. I had the spark plug caps in my pocket on the way home. I changed the caps in the driveway and could not believe the difference. It was a completely different motorcycle. The resisters in the caps often burn out. If you check the caps with a voltage meter they should read 5000 OHMS. Anything higher or lower replace the cap.
It is possible to replace the clutch plates with the motor in the frame. The clearance is very tight. First, check that the clutch cable is not binding. This can cause the clutch to slip each shift and it is a lot easier to replace. Next smell the oil to see if there are burnt clutch plates. It may be easier to try replacing just the clutch springs. If they are below 1.35 inches (34.2 mm) they are below tolerance and need to be replaced. New tolerance is 1.4 inches (35.5 mm).Use only OEM Honda springs. If you inspect the clutch plates and they are warped, scored, or burnt replace the whole set with OEM Honda parts. Replace the cable first, then the springs, then the plates.

My 1982 Honda goldwing clutch will not disengage when trying to put in gear or when stopping, any suggestions?

Try adjusting the cable slack at the back of the motor. If there is still not enough tension in the system you may have a worn cable housing and you will have to replace the cable assembly. Sometimes the lever hole (where the cables attach) and the hole where the mounting bolt for the lever wear out of round. You may find replacing the lever and the mounting bolt will also help the clutch work more smoothly.

How to replace a clutch in my honda goldwing gl1000

First of all make sure you need a clutch. If the clutch only slips for an instant when you let out the lever. You may only need a cable. You may be able to remove the clutch cover at the back of the motor(very very limited space). Unbolt the springs and remove the plates. It can be done on the 1100, with out unbolting the motor and spinning it for access. If there is enough room it would certainly save the time of removing carbs, radiator, left frame section, unbolting and spinning the motor to get better access.

Clutch slipping

You did adjust ir, right?

Once up on a time, there was an external adjustment on Honda. It was a 10 mm or so nut locking a flat blade screw head. Loosen the nut, snug the screw and then back off 1/4 turn.

Join the Honda Riders Club for a small fee and you can get access to all service manuals according to the web site.

Good luck on your adjustment.

you should obtain the service guides for best chances, but it's not too hard on a gl1100.. I have the same motor in my gl1100i (82). There are links to downloadable versions of the manuals. Search for Steve Saunders Goldwing Forums... Then search within for the Goldwing library... If you have no luck, I'll post detailed steps to remove the radiator for a Honda GL100 motor, specific to 1981-1983.
