Loosen the front brake master cylinder clamping bolts and slide the entire assembly down towards the right handlebar switch housing as close as it will go. If the brake light does not go off then, the switch in the right handlebar switch housing is broken and must be replace.

To replace the switch, you must take the two bolts that hold the housing halves together out. Lift the upper half and loosen the throttle cable and idle cable. Remove the throttle sleeve and allow the lower half of switch housing to come away from the handlebar. The front brake light switch is the small switch in front of the housing. Unsolder the wires, replace the switch with a new one, and resolder the original wires to the new switch. Reassemble the throttle sleeve and switch housing, adjust the throttle cable and idle cable and check for proper operation.

Hello, I have a 2005 1200 r Sportster. All of my lights work including turn signals. Problem is the the rear brake light does no engage either by using the front lever or the pedal.

Hi John:
There are switches at both the pedal and lever that activate the same brake light. Either you are not getting power to the switches, or it is not getting to the brake light (or the brake light bulb is burnt out). Try checking the bulb first, and while you have the bulb out, use a voltmeter to see if you're getting power to the bulb. Then check to see if you're getting power to the switches. I don't know if there is a separate fuse for that circuit, so check your fuses. Odds are you'll have it solved pretty quickly.
Hope this helps.

Parking brake light won't go off after releasing brake lever

Park brake lights normally operate by a small plunger type switch the turns off when the level or pedal is placed in the off position. Over time the spring in the lever weakens and placing the lever in the off position no longer depresses the switch. The switch can sometimes be adjusted to make better contact, or the switch bracket can be bent so the lever and switch make proper contact.

Break tail light stays on all the time? where is the swich

There are two switches. One is on the right handlebar switch housing. It is operated by the front brake lever. When you pull the lever, it pivots on a pin which causes the backside of the lever to move forward. There is a tap on the backside of the lever that presses the front brake light switch turning the brake light off. When you pull the lever, the tab moves forward and releases the switch turning the light on. Now, if the light stays on, you can loosen the bolts that hold the front brake master cylinder onto the handlebars, slide the front brake master cylinder down as close to the right handlebar switch housing as possible. If this doesn't turn the light off, this switch my be bad or the lever has too much wear in it and should be replaced.

There is another switch in the system for the rear brake. Follow the metal brake line coming out of the rear of the rear brake master cylinder and you'll come to a "Tee fitting" with a pressure switch in it. This is the rear brake light switch. Usually when it goes bad, the brake lights will not come on, not light up all time. But, then I'm pretty sure that I haven't seen everytig. Test the switch for contineuity using an obm meter.

Good Luck

When I depress the front brake lever I have no brake light but when I use the foot pedal it lights up. 2005 yamaha 650 classic. is this an easy fix

Front brake light switch is likely bad. Look on the underside of the lever for the switch & connections. If you connect the terminals and the light comes on, it is your switch.

The brake light stays on I changed the rear brake swith and the light is still on

The brake light also is activated by the front brake switch. Check adjustment on rear brake switch to see if you can get the light to go out, if so then problem solved. Otherwise check front brake switch.
Hope this helps.

Brake light stays on

Hi,

basically, the brake light is activated by either the front or the foot brake. Each has a small switch coupled to either the brake lever or the brake pedal. To check if it is the front brake lever, look closely on the right handlebar area where the front brake lever pivots. There would be a small switch with two (2) wires. Often this wires are connected by a spade type connector, remove any of the the two connector/wire and observe if the brake light would switch off. If yes, shorted front brake switch, if not, then chances are that the culprit is the foot brake. There are variations of designs how the foot brake activates the brake light. Most would call for a linkage (either short cable or metal rod). from the foot brake to a small tubular switch. Try removing any or both wires/connectors to the foot brake switch. If brake light is till one, then problem is elsewhere. If brake light is off, then the foot brake switch needs looking into. Often found faults is mis-adjusted switch. The switch rotates on a threaded tab. The switch has to be adjusted till the brake light powers off. In some cases, the swith has to be replaced.

Just a start, do postback how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.
