What are the factory settings for the carbs on a ZZR400N. I am having trouble getting the bike to run/idle properly.

Before you start messing with any settings, pull the carbs and give them a good cleaning, most important, pull out the jets and clean them on their own, Bet their clogged

Can't start my yz250fp dirt bike

Have a trained tech service and properly jet the carb and set idle and idle mixture.
If you have spark, compression, and the valves are adjusted properly the only thing left is the carb. The FCR carb is as complex as the entire engine!

What are the factory settings for the carbs on a ZZR400. I am having trouble getting the bike to run/idle properly.

Generally all carbs from the factory have a mixture screw setting of between 1 1/4 and 1 1/2 turn out from being bottomed out. Then I would check the sync on the carbs next. If that doesn't cure it then you can call a parts dept and ask them what the factory jets are and verify that you have those installed. Unless you have a pipe or full exhaust they should be factory. If you have aftermarket exhaust of slip on then you might have to dig a little deeper and see if it has factory parts or a jet kit.

Factory carb settings

This can vary from year to year, model to model, and make to make. A service manual for your specific bike may shed some light on what the default settings are on your carbs. Sometimes a simple search on your year make and model of bike with carb adjustments can return the answer to your question. Here is an example: 1979 Honda CB750 Carb Adjustments. One other factor in this is the elevation you are at. At higher elevations the air is thinner making your bike run rich as there isn't enough oxygen to mix with the fuel. Once you know where your adjustments are, you can get them fairly close by slowly adjusting them with the bike idling. You want to turn slowly (1/8 turn at a time) until you hear the motor idle increase. For multiple carbs, start with one and repeat on all other carbs. If you continue to turn your jets after the idle increases, it will eventually start idling down again. I have been taught to try to find the boundaries going each way and seek the middle ground. Once this is performed on all carbs, you may need to adjust your throttle stop adjustment screw to bring yoyr idle back to specification. Good luck with your carbs, safe and happy riding to you.

On my honda goldwing gl1100 the RPM goes eratic. the rpm goes up and down from .07 to 1.3. I was told that the carb needed to be adjusted equaly and maybe cleaned. can you clarify thanks for the help

Check for air leaks. Clean the carbs paying attention to the idle circuit. Get your mercury gauge out and resink the carbs. If the idle is set too high (especially if carbs out of sink or dirty) you will get irratic idling. If the idle is set to low it will just quit. To adjust the bike properly make sure you have a tank of no ethanol fuel . No ethanol fuel will raise the idle. Ethanol fuel will lower the idle, cause some variation, and often times will cause knocking/pinging upon acceleration . Remember your bike was designed to run on 94 octane no ethanol. I guess we just have to be thankful they run at all on the fuel they sell nowadays.

How do you set the carburetor screws on a 1984 60cc yamaha 3 wheeler? There are 2 screws on the carb one is the idle and I assume the other is the high speed setting. I've adjusted them both all the way in...

Half right, one is the idle the other is the air mixture screw, which really only affects idle mixture. The mixture screw is usually about 1.5-2 turns out from screwing it all the way in. then when the bike is idling it is adjusted by screwing it in a little until it bogs down (rich), then screwing it out a little until the engine revs up and down(lean) and finding a smooth engine speed in the middle.
To initially set the idle, look down the carb throat and screw it in until it just starts to lift the slide.
But this doesnt help the starting problem, there may be a blockage in the carb, or if you have cleaned that already, may have to check further, many of those smaller engines need the suction though the standard air cleaner to run properly

Need help with setting up my dell'orto phbd 14 bs carb for my mini crosser jus recently changed head for a 44mm big bore 3 port piston so need to reset my carb and dont know how to ? i,e idle screw and air...

first get the bike running, turn the idle adjustment up enough to keep it running. start with the air/fuel screw, 1 1/4 turn out. adjust the screw which ever way increases the idle 1/4 turn at a time, wait 10 seconds after every 1/4 turn to allow the engine speed to adjust. As the idle goes up you can use the idle screw to keep it in its normal range. at some point, the idle will start to come back down, this is when you want to start going the other way. idealy you want it set in the middle of the range of when it stopped increasing and when it started to decrease. If you are not able to reach this happy medium within the normal adjustment range, you will need to put the proper pilot jet in and start the process again. This should get you up and running, if it is a generic carb you may will have to adjust the jetting to get the bike performing its best after that, but thats another chapter.

Hard start, trouble idleing

Drain the carburetor. There should be a screw on the lower side of the carb float bowl. Remove the screw then replace it after the fuel drains. Turn the gas back on and wait a minute for the carb to fill with gas. Install new stock spark plugs. If the bike doesn't start and run properly then shut off the gas and remove the carburetor from the engine.

Remove the float bowl and clean the entire carb with a spray carb cleaner from the auto parts store. Wear protective goggles to avoid getting spray in your eyes. Spray into all the little airways and fittings in the carb. This process should get you back on the road.

Idle speed problems

Hi Walker14,

You have to sync thecarbs and also you will have to reset the air-fuel mixture screws.
One of the carburators should be factory adjusted, I dont wn a kawasaki but I own a YAMAHA SECA XJ750R and thro it I am sharing my experince.
Once you have located the factory preadjusted carburator you can thn set the others to its specs. I use the feeler gauge to do for my bikes carburators and it works fine.
With regards to the mixture screw..... get the all in tightened but slowly aas to not damage the pin end of it!.
Start the bike and get it to normal running temp and thn set the screws 2 and half turns may need to set your idling speed before you begin this setting of the mixture screws, you prolly will hveto go higher on revs or vicecersa ....onc eyou are at the mixture screws and adjusting them , you will surely note the differenc ein sound of he bike an its idling ..
