Well, You have to have headers to replace them with, that usually means your going to need a different muffler too because the original headers are not as big as the race ones so the muffler will be different too. So your not just pulling the headers your removing the entire exhaust. Basically unbolt the old and rebolt the new. simple as that. Make sure your re-jet the carburetor or re tune the ecm so your not running the motor to rich or too lean.

'74 Eldo - I want to increase performance.

I suppose you can go as big as you want, im sure a race shop will make you a custom set of headers as well as to the other exhaust work. Look for performace shops in your area, and give them a call.

What is the right exhaust to use for a high compression setup on an h22a?

for exhaust, if you want stock looking then get a prelude muffler and have a shop make the piping the same size as the prelude exhaust (which is 2.25 i think?)
if you want sleeper exhausts then
get two 2-1/2" dynomax race bullets $27.95 ea. from summit. and a Magnaflow street muffler in your style of choice. $120?? get 1 race bullet welded in just behind the cat or header and the other back before the first 90 degree bend and the muffler welded on.

This is the best way to make a super sleeper. Magnaflow's are super quiet.

Race bullets act as resonators. they are only available in 2.5" in/out but thats ok.

I recently put headers on my 318 and didn't reattach the o2 sensor because there was no plug on the header. could this be the reason my truck now misses?

Ya you will need to install the 02 sensor ,, you can buy the adaptor threw a place like summit racing and it will need to be welded on to the header.

87 mazda rx 7 n/a cutting out at 4000rpm

Sounds like plugged up pre cats, my NA had the same problem I got a Racing Beat header that eliminated the pre cats and it went away. I've also seen them on eBay for cheaper. Either way you can't lose the stock header is like a cast iron stove attached to the engine it's heavy and massive.

Heat questions

The shock would get just as hot without the exhaust being next to it. The amount of heat generated by the thousands of up/down cycles a shock goes through, especially at racing speeds, is higher than the heat transferred from the pipe being next to it.
