Question about kawasaki VN 2000 Classic LT Motorcycles

1 Answer

2007 kaw.LT 2000. Had bike three years ago off the show room new spring 2009. after 6 months on road mechanic didn't find what was wrong and replaced key switch finding original mount was loose and connection might have gotten wet in the rain? So Key switch on tank replaced once. New battery strong. Start switch is in right handle bar and kill switch above and next to it. Has electric fuel kit which usually can be heard engage and ready before starting but no sound after turning key on occationally. Press starter button nothing happens occationally. Only way to start then is to turn on then off then on again before pushing starter button, until the other day it didn't start. First mechanic at dealership recommended doing this. (Very unprofessional.) Mechanics are tracing down from start button and saying how it's got a whole lot of other problems and new wiring possible as a result. It's not been diagnosed so how can that be the solution before the problem is discovered? Because they don't know what's wrong? I asked the service manager to use his expertise and personally find out. A friend and Honda mechanic said tighten down all connections first. Then check for a strong battery and than check the start button connection or relay switch then down the line to the starter connection. What are the possibilities to resolve this problem? A. B. C. or D right? What say u?

    Thanks, exactly right A>B>C>or >D. The advise you gave is printed out for my support to clearly show the manager again what I expect from his service work. I am going there now. Thanks again for this simple advise in doing the job right.

Yes, the problem is a bad contact in the electrical system.
Yes, replacing the wiring before doing a proper diagnostic is a sign of a miserable expertize and bad customer service. Yes, they want to replace it because they don't want to check it - a long and fiddly job.
Yes, your friend is correct: you must check all the connectors first since they are the ones that are failing, not the wiring itself and yes, the procedure he recommended is the correct one. My suspicion is that the connectors to the relay for the starter are loose or corroded - check them first.

Can you put a transmission from a 2002 chevy impala in a 1999 Saturn sw2

about replacing a transmission with one from a Junkyard or cross referencing them. and to show you that not all 4T65E transmissions are interchangeable, although they look alike. Guys with the comp g package or the Impala police option often find this out the hard way.
Your car and the potential donor car will have a tag in the trunk (usually under the spare tire cover) that lists the RPO codes for your car, along with your VIN. RPO=Regular Production Order. Several of these codes relate to the transmission, and you will need them to begin to find a proper match. If you can't find the RPO tags, you can look up the RPOs for a nominal fee ($5) according to the VIN number at the following website: www . compnine . com .
I know these transmissions are different in at least 5 areas, and you have to match each area for a proper swap.
FIRST is the transmission type, which relates to torque converter size, the strength of the internal gears, and the strength of the differential. Here are the basic types along with their RPO codes:
M15 - 245 mm (9.6 in) torque converter
MN3 - 258 mm (10.2 in) torque converter
MN7 - 258 mm (10.2 in) torque converter and heavy-duty gearbox and differential (see 4T65E-HD)
MD7 - 245 mm (9.6 in) torque converter (Chinese version)
M76 - 245 mm (9.6 in) torque converter (with all-wheel drive capability)
You will want a match these RPO codes.
SECOND is the final drive ratio. The PCM can detect the difference, and in some cars may not engage if the correct final drive is not present. Here are the RPO codes for the four different final drives used in the transmission.
FQ3 - RATIO TRANSAXLE FINAL DRIVE 2.86;
FR2 - RATIO TRANSAXLE FINAL DRIVE 2.93;
F83 - RATIO TRANSAXLE FINAL DRIVE 3.05;
FR9 - RATIO TRANSAXLE FINAL DRIVE 3.29;
To narrow year search for potential cars, the following site have pretty good info on the final drives used on various cars. Click on the years of the cars in question.http://www.gmtuners.com/transmission/index.htm
THIRD is the converter stall speed. There will be small differences for most cars as it is based on car weight as well as final drive value and engine ratings. Reusing the cars original torque converter will address that area. Some indication of stall speed value is given in the K-factor information in the above gmtuners page. This bottom of this page from the gmtuners website will show you how to decipher the four digit code on the torque converter. http://www.gmtuners.com/gmtransinfo.htm
FOURTH, the torque converter needs to have the correct lockup clutch friction material for the PCM that controls it (regardless of HD nor not). This changed over the years. The newer ones can be used on older transmissions with calibration changes, but older type in newer transmissions will fail. Reusing the cars original torque converter will address that area.
FIFTH is area is electrical compatibility, and this is what trips up a lot of guys. 3 different electrical interfaces to the transmissions were used from 97-08. Some of these differences had to do with how the PCM determined what gear the transmission was in, or was commanded to be in. If you look on a GM parts web site, you will see that three different internal harnesses are available for the 4T65E. Each of the three harnesses is listed below along with the cars that use the harness. Your car and the donor car will have to match. If you have any additional insight, please leave me a comment and I can correct this post.

I have 2006 super glide I just picked up a teo months ago. I rode it for a few days. I was out on it last week in the heavy rain. When I went to start it yesterday it was dead. I put the battery...

The battery on most motocycles cant take much abuse.Most batteries on bikes with proper care last about three or four years.If the one you have is this age or older I would purchase a new one.Good Luck.

We have a 2001 Mazda Tribute and the yellow warning light on the dashboard is permanently on. Our mechanic is baffled. Can you help?

This vehical is notorious for problems, regardless of year 2000-2009, Same vehical as ford escape, mercury, You can disconnect the battery for 30 mins to reset indicator or You can go to most auto parts stores and have them put it on a check engine scanner for free and they can tell you what to replace plus they can clear the codes., but chances are with this vehical its going to be tranny related and big problems down the road. My friend just bought one 3 months ago with 70,000 miles and the tranny just burnt up o/d and reverse. $2000 fix. We had done a ton of research on this vehical and only found more problems. We were gonna do it ourselves but aamco had a sweet deal with warranty. Sell.Sell.Sell.
