Question about Triumph Bonneville Motorcycles

1 Answer

Hello I have pre unit gearbox without the engine running all gears select fine without use of the clutch, touch the clutch and it will not select 4th gear going up the box or 2nd going down, the same problem exsists withe the enging running and the bike rolling in gear, I am told the gearbox has been completely re built with all new bearings and seals etc, it is fitted to a triton with a new belt drive primary drive, all the other gear changes are quite smooth and easy to select 4th and 2nd can be selected with considerable pressure if you dont use the clutch Regards Albert.

SOURCE: 1957 pre unit inner chaincase felt washer position

Inner chaincase has sprungfork plate rivited on, between which you should have a large plain washer and felt washer that are in situ before inner case is located over GB mainshft. if you have the projecting brass sleeve (bearing) this will fit inside felt/washer on assembly. Its not critical and you wont lose a lot of oil even if you dont use the above.

SOURCE: Can select 1st gear and 2nd gear but am unable to

The gearbox does not need to be relpaced. The bike has a bent shift fork. The engine comes out then gets a complete tear down to get to the bad fork. This will probably cost $1200 or so. Call a dealer and get an estimate. Please rate my answer. Thanks.

Fiesta started making noises either gearbox or clutch? clunks going in to reverse, shudders driving off in 1st gear

sounds like your clutch is going out, is it hard to put in gear with clutch all the way depressed? could also be the sinkronyzer going out, could be the gears in the transmission also going bad. need to check the fluid in the transmission.

Reverse works now after being fixed, but now wont go past second gear

is the gearchange change connected correctly ,its on a spline underneath and as you move the gear stick this moves the gear selector rod on the gearbox ,you can soon tell as you can select the gears without engine running or the clutch pushed down

Won't go into gear. Like it's stuck in neutral .Started off as difficult to shift when stopped about 20 min. later lost all gears while shifting from 2nd to 3rd.

Sounds like a clutch-related problem. To see if it is, firstly get the car in an area where it could move forwards or backwards a bit without hitting anything. I'm going to assume now that you can select all the gears just like normal when the engine is off. If you can't, then the problem is with the gearbox linkage or the gearbox itself. Then, with the engine stopped, select 1st gear and put your foot on the clutch and then start the engine. If the car attempts to drive off or the starter motor is driving the car, then the clutch cable requires checking or adjusting, or your clutch has worn out. A worn clutch won't allow you to change gears with the engine running. You may be able to tighten the clutch cable a bit to get a temporary fix, but think about replacing the clutch now.

I can not put my car into first or 2nd without really forcing it does this mean the gear box is gone. 3rd and 4th gear work fine

will be clutch cable or clutch hydraulic system fault depending on what car it is could be clutch assembly sticking clutch plate on splines will not be gearbox fault if you can select gears ok with engine turned off

Car wont roll forward or back even in neutral

I assume it's a manual transmission.
If the car will not roll backward or forward in neutral (with or without the clutch engaged) the transmission is most likely locked in two gears at the same time.
This may happen if gear selectors are excessively worn. If you are able to examine the gear selection levers external to the gearbox, ensure they are in the 'neutral' (no gear selected) position when the gear lever is in Neutral. If not in correct position, you may be able to manually reset the levers to correct neutral position and thereby unlock the gearbox.
In any case, if it's happened once, it will happen again, so get the gearbox and gear selection mechanism checked for wear or breakage.

No third gear!!!

Check the gear linkage adjustment is correct.
Ensure 3rd gear throw is fully engaging when selected.
You can check this without the motor running,- depress clutch and carefully go through the gear selections - ensure when selecting 3rd you can feel selection detent (passing over the syncohub detent pawl).
If the problem persists, and no fault can be found with selection adjustment, you probably have worn gearbox bearings, or broken synco energiser spring internal to the gearbox.
