Question about 2003 Yamaha V Star 1100 Custom

1 Answer

I have a 03 V Star 1100 Custom, sometimes but not all the time, when you press the start button the motor starts to turn over but locks up and the starter makes a noise. It shoulds like it might be out of time but other times it start ok and once it's started it runs ok. Has a new battery. Any ideals?

Hi, Anonymous your starter motor is not the problem it's the starter drive/Bendix/clutch which is a mechanical gear driven component that engages the clutch pack ring gear to turn over the engine. It has an internal mechanism that allows the gear to turn in one direction and once the engine starts allows the drive gear to free spin. If gear free spins in both directions then the drive gear has failed, it is not serviceable and needs to be replaced. Engine won't turn over and i just charged the battery

Check that the sidestand switch and the clutch switch are working. If you get a click when you press the start button then you have different problems. ie the starter motor may have failed.

My 2006 V Star 1100 Custom out of the blue refused to start right. When I push the starter button you can hear the starter spinning but it does not start. When I tap on the starter with a hammer it kicks...

If the starter does not spin unless you tap it with a plastic hammer then you need new starter brushes. If the starter motor is spinning but the motor is not, then the problem is with the one way clutch that is attached to the fly wheel. The is damage in this case involves two parts the large starter gear and the one way clutch. if the mating surface of the large starter gear is not perfectly smooth then the clutch will not grab it to turn over the motor. Part numbers 2 and 6. http://www.bikebandit.com/houseofmotorcycles/2006-yamaha-xvs11awv/o/m8488#sch531535

2002 Yamaha Vstar 1100 Custom. STARTER Problem

The starter button is used in an open circuit design.
You must press the starter button to "Close" this circuit before the starter will engage. Taking the starter button out of the loop helps support the suspect short. Assuming you kept the starter button wires from touching. :) If not, it is most likely the starter button.

Trace the wires coming from the starter button.
There could be a short circuit. (Same as pushing the starter button). Check along the handle bars and anywhere rubbing could cause a break in the insulation. Try this at night with the lights off.
You may be able to SEE the spark and locate it quickly.

Good luck!

2000 yamaha vstar 1100 custom. starter problem?

Could be a starter issue, or a wiring issue. Check for power at the starter when the button is pressed. If you have power, you need a starter, if not, trouble shoot the electrical system.
