Loss power on my 1987 yamaha virago after a backfire. What could be the problem. Spark plugs are not filed. And it making a funny noise. I think I might have blue out of exhaust gasket. Would this cause a drastic loss of power

Hi, Anonymous your bike was designed to run at maximum performance with mufflers buy and install a set for your personal tastes this will put an end to backfiring for this scenario you will need your service/owners manual if you can't find the first and best tool you ever bought for your Yamaha, despair not, for a mere $0 you can download another one. My 1981 virago 920 is running rich and backfires

Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Severely discharged or a damaged battery, should have 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
2. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
3. Faulty main circuit breaker and or connections.
4. Faulty ignition coil and or connections.
5. Faulty spark plug, oil or gas fouled, wrong heat range or service type, wrong gap, loose in the cylinder head, broken electrode or insulator.
6. Faulty spark plug cables, leaking or broken, internal damage check for spark leakage in the dark.
7. Faulty ignition module, switch, CKP, MAP, CMP, sensor and or any connector in the ignition circuit could have corroded, loose, or broken pins/sockets
8. Burnt exhaust valve or air leak in the exhaust system.

I have an 1987 Yamaha 535cc Virago, the bike backfires, I have loss of power, the rear plug is black with carbon, the front plug has as carbon but is wet. the front diaphragm is slightly wrinkled aro

Definetly have some carb issues. And they will need to come off,be cleaned, floats set,and synched. If youve never done this before,id suggest that this bike NOT be your first attempt. They are VERY finnicky!!

I have a 1984 virago 1000 that backfires alot what do you think it is

Carbs dirty, cold air leaking into hot exhaust exploding! if no adjustments were made from the time when not making the fuss to now cleaning might be enough.but if adjustments were made a shop would best solve it.sometimes fouled plugs can be replaced to help.
