Question about Harley Davidson FXDWG Dyna Wide Glide Motorcycles

1 Answer

2003 Dyna Wide, fuel gauge. I want to replace it with a Kuraykn LED model and have to remove the stock gauge. I pull it out of the tank and disconnect the black wire, but cannot see how to get the chrome cap and black trim separate from the white cylinder where the wires hook. Do I need to go below the tank and disconnect the wires there and pull the whole unit out?

I think the Kuraykn unit uses the stock Harley sending unit. All it replaces is the "head" of the unit. There is a small tube that runs down through the tank that the power wire runs through. Unplug the wire under the tank and you can take the pin out of the plug with a small wire or something to depress the little lock on the pin. If not, just cut it and the gauge will come up. Wire the Kuraykn unit as per the directions that came with it.

Good Luck

How do I drain fuel tank on 2003 fxdwg of bad fuel

Pull the fuel line off the carb, and stick the end in a gas catch can (gas can).

Remove gas cap (to allow more air in and help fuel flow faster), and put petcock on RESERVE.

It'll drain through the fuel line into the catch can.

How do you remove gas tank from 2003 dyna low rider

Remove the instrument console and the front and rear mounting bolts and then the instrument wiring and the overflow hose and the fuel line at shut off valve making sure the valve is "OFF" and drain the tank and then remove the crossover hose at one side and plug line and hose and then disconnect fuel gauge connector at left side of frame under the tank.

Dyna wide glide fuel gauge wiring

Best answer to this is to ask the H-D parts department where you would buy the gauge to print off a copy of the installation instructions that come with the led gauge and then look at the 96 wiring to see if it will match up. Otherwsie at first glance it seems to me that the led gauge will work on the same principle of a variable amount of amperage flowing through the sender unit to ground through the led circuitry and should work as the flow is from source to ground through the variable resistance in the fuel sender.

How do i install the fuel regulator on my H-D 2005 wide glide?

Stop the engine when refueling or servicing the fuel system. Do not smoke or allow open flame or sparks near gasoline. Gasoline is extremely flammable and highly explosive, which could result in death or serious injury.

Do not replace the special teflon coated fuel pump wiring with ordinary bulk wire. Ordinary insulation materials may deteriorate when in contact with gasoline.

Carefully inspect hose for cuts, tears, holes or other damage. Replace hose if any damage is found. Even a small hole can cause a reduction in fuel pressure.

Refer to the DYNA Models Electrical Diagnostic Manual for information on the function and testing of the fuel pump.

To prevent spray of fuel, purge system of high-pressure fuel before supply line is disconnected. Gasoline is extremely flammable and highly explosive, which could result in death or serious injury. (00275a)

1. Purge the fuel supply line of high pressure gasoline.

a. Disconnect the fuel pump fuse located in the electrical caddy.

b. Start the engine and allow the vehicle to run.

c. When the engine stalls, operate the starter for 3 seconds to remove any remaining fuel from the fuel lines.

To prevent accidental vehicle start-up, which could cause death or serious injury, disconnect negative (-) battery cable before proceeding. (00048a)

2. Disconnect negative battery cable.

3. Remove instrument console

Gasoline can drain from the crossover line when disconnected from fuel tank. Gasoline is extremely flammable and highly explosive, which could result in death or serious injury. Wipe up spilled fuel immediately and disposeof rags in a suitable manner. (00259a)

5. Drain fuel tank.

a. Obtain a short section of hose (5/16 inch I.D.). Insert bolt in one end of hose and install hose clamp to ensure that end is securely plugged.

b. Cut clamp from one end of crossover hose. Quickly replace crossover hose

on fuel tank fitting with open end of short hose while directing flow of gasoline from free end of crossover hose into suitable container.

6. Unplug fuel pump and sender connector

7. Remove vent hose .

8. Remove top plate screws and discard.

9. On FXDL and FXDWG models, rotate top plate until vent tube clears fuel tank.
