it is called wet sump. After a long sit the oil will drain into the cranckase and the tank will be be low. Always run it before adding oil!

You may just have it overfilled. If you checked your oil before you started the engine up and found it to be low and added oil, this is more than likely the case. Since the oil tank is higher than the engine, the Sportster (and Softail models) have a tendency to "oil soak". What is happening is as the bike sits the oil seeps past the check valve in the oil pump and starts to settle in the engine. When you check the oil tank, it's low. So, you add a quart. When you start the engine or turn it with the starter, the oil pump pumps the oil out of the engine and into the tank which is already full. The oil has to go somewhere so out the filler it comes.

Now, to determine if your oil pump is indeed pumping into the engine, screw the oil pressure sending unit out and remove the spark plugs. Spin the engine with the starter and watch to see if the oil is being pumped out. If so, the oil pump is fine. We already know that the scavenger pump is pumping oil back into the tank. So, if you think the engine is overfilled, drain about half of the oil out of the tank and start the engine. Watch the oil level in the tank with a flashlight. Do not allow it to run dry. Allow the engine to run until it is warm and then check the oil. There are two marks on the dipstick. The top mark is "FULL HOT" and the lower mark is "FULL COLD". Check the oil with the bike on the side stand. Do not overfill.

Where is the oil filter on a 1979 harley sportster

Hi Anonymous, Believe it or not 1979 XLH 1000 did not have an oil filter from the factory. They made an accessory kit you could purchase seperately and install yourself. Have nice day.

I have a 1973 harley davidson sportster xlh 1000 with drag pipes i just bought it, but it ran great it sat for 3 months now it pops and backfires and is have a oily mist from the air cleaner and i dont...

popping and backfiring sounds like a lean fuel mixture, caused by the wonderful gas we are getting these days. try draining fuel system, put in fresh fuel. the oily substance is coming from the crankcase vents located within the air filter cavity, a lot of bikes do that, ck. oil level not over full.

Hi Curtis, and the usual suspects are:
1. Oil tank/pan overfilled.
2. Restricted oil return line to oil tank/pan.
3. Restricted breather operation.
4. Restricted oil filter.
5. Piston rings badly worn or broken.
6. Valve guides or seals worn or crushed.
7. O-ring damaged or missing from oil pump/crankcase junction.

How do i beef up oil presure 1979 harley 1000 iron head

You don't. This ain't an old Chevy or Mopar product. Your Ironhead may only hold four pounds of oil pressure idling on a hot day. But, the Harley oilling system is a high volume low pressure system. The bottom end of your Ironhead is built using roller bearings instead of shell type "insert" bearing like in a car or the foreign built bikes. In between the rollers, there is nothing to maintain the oil pressure on the system and the oil flows freely. As long as you've got a good "return" of oil coming back to the oil tank, your engine is fine.

I just purchased a 2003 883 100 anniverssary sportster. t was parked for a few years. i change the filter and put new oil, new battery and spark plug. when i started the bike the oil cap blew out and it...

Excess motor oil that blew out the oil cap ,when you've parked for a long time the oil in the tank will drop down in the crankcase, then when you start the motor it will go back in the oil tank and then overflow the oil level...You must have to drain the oil tank again and refill it at the correct oil level....

I need to change the starter on a 1979 harley 1000 sportster

This is a fairly involved job, but if you remove the battery, oil tank and related brackets, the starter can be accessed from there. Have you converted to electronic, single fire ignition? that is the best upgrade for your machine, you will never go back to points.

How do u set the timing on a oil pump for a 76 harley sportster xlh 1000 lay down pump

On the oil pump shaft housing, just below the gear, there's a small square slot cut out of the housing. If you rotate the oil pump shaft, you'll see a dot on the shaft. You want this dot on the shaft in the slot in the housing when the Top Dead Center mark is in the timing hole on the other side of the engine. You have to install the oil pump like you would a distributor. You turn the dot away from the hole and when you put the pump into position, the oil pump drive gear turns the shaft while the pump goes up on the studs. When you get seated, the marks should be aligned.

Where is the oil filter located on a 1979 Harley XLH Sportster?

I don't think the '79 model had an oil filter. The '80 & '81 model had a bracket that had a filter between the rear cylinder and the oil tank. The 78 and earlier models had the drop in filter in the tank. I think you can put one on if you change the front engine brackets to '82 to early '84 models.

Good Luck
