Turn the idle screw outward , past the 1.5 turns. That is an initial setting and not meant to be the final setting. If it still runs fast, reset the throttle cable linkages for more slack in the throttle line. I did a clarification because I do not want money for my answers.

    What jetting and how?

  • rcnsb01 Mar 23, 2011

Thanx, when I bought the bike, the guy said he'd just rebuilt the carb, so now I'll very carefully take it back apart and see what he messed up, I'll keep you informed as to what was found and what resolved the problem. Thanx again.

The problem relates to the fuel flow. The flow is low or bit extra.Due to this the high idle problem is noticed. You will need to clean the carb and jets.If jets are faulty/ worn out then it has to be replaced. Jets are used to control the amount of fuel sent to the engine. --------- ThunderJet is a jet-able, externally mounted third fuel circuit that improves the performance of circuit carbs such as the S&S . Unmodified, these carbs typically have a low speed, or intermediate, circuit that supplies fuel from idle , at which point the carbs' main jet circuit becomes active, delivering more fuel to the engine. These two circuits must then supply fuel for the rest of the rpm range. The problem is: the remaining rpm range is too wide for only 2 circuits to handle efficiently. The tuner generally encounters problems jetting the carb to give good, crisp mid-range response and still have strong top-end power. A idle problem is the issue due to this.. Back the main jet down, carburetion in the mid-range is good but top-end is lacking. Increase the main, top-end improves but now the mid-range is rich; flat spots or hesitation is encountered. ------------------------- Get your carb jetted right by the store and make sure that there are no intake leaks . ------- Take off the air cleaner. Does the filter smell like gas? Do you hit a certain rpm where it feels like its stumbling? A slight reversion at cruising rpm can soot up the plugs, and you are noticing the symptoms when you start, it goes to high idle.------- If carb not getting jetted right, then jets are to be replaced or may be carb needs to be rebuilt by the garage mechanic.--------But first thing to be tested is intake leaks and getting the car re-jetted and this should mostly help out.If not then further part replacement, troubleshooting has to be done.---------------- This should help.Keep updated.Thanks.Helpmech.

runs rich on high speed or hunts with black smoke
and fine on idle Lets understand it this way whenever there is black smoke that means there is not proper combustion in the cylender head means un burned fuel means less power which is either fuel is not pure due to dust particals or there is not proper current through the spark plug that means fuel is not burning properly and resulting in to smoke in the exoust if you have checked the fuel already then check for the current coil for proper currrent through a wiring diagrame which can possibly make you check up to the inverter level to see if your inver is malfunctioning if its ok then check the air fuel mix screw on the carburator to check that the full oxygen supply is going in the carb for proper combustion try adjusting the air fuel ratio on high speed or on load even than the problem persists check if your spark plug is wet after a brief running if it is dry thsn its fine if it covered and wet with engine oil that means engine oil is comming in to the cumbustion chamber and burning with thr fuel and resulting in to smoke for that matter you will have to check your piston rings

How do i adjust a S&S super B carb, cold start mostly

The Super B carb is not as forgiving of improper jetting as the Super E model carb due to the lack of an accelerator pump. The only adjustment you have on the carb is the idle mixture screw and idle stop screw. The idle stop screw simply adjusts the idle speed of the engine. The idle mixture screw should be adjusted somewhere between 3/4 and 1 1/4 turn out from the bottom. If it is out of this range, the carb is not jetted correctly.

Through experience over the years I've found that the Super B used on a Big Twin Harley should be jetted 29.5 on the slow jet with a 70 or 72 on the main jet. If used on an Ironhead Sportster, slow jet of 26 with either a 66 or 68 main jet.

The way to tune the carb slow speed circuit is to allow the engine to warm up and adjust the idle mixture screw one turn off the bottom. Then try to rev the engine. If the engine does not rev cleanly, try coming out a half turn on the idle mixture. If it seems to help, continue until it revs cleanly. If this is the case, you slow jetting is too lean, install a richer jet and repeat the above procedure. Once you get it tuned to where the engine revs cleanly with the idle mixture screw at one turn out, you low speed jetting is correct.

The high speed jetting is not quite as simple to set as this has to be done on the road. I usually find a long uphill run to test the jetting to keep top speeds reasonable. At about 55-60 miles per hour, roll the throttle on in high gear. Feel the way the engine pulls. If it pulls good, back off on the throttle about 1/8th turn. If it pulls better, it's just slightly lean. If when you roll the throttle on, the engine starts spitting back through the carb and doesn't run well, you are way lean. Either way move upwards on your jet size one step at the time and retest.

If the bike seems sluggish and blows black smoke when you do the "roll-on", you're too rich. Install leaner jet one step at a time.

Now, most people confuse a "mid range stumble" with a carb problem. All efforts to tune this stumble out done on the carb are futile. The problem is in the exhaust system. Most bikes do not like open drag pipes for street use. They will exhibit this mid range stumble. The remedy is to put a bolt with three nuts on it on the inside of the pipe or any other means to create just a bit of backpressure on the exhaust. This usually cures the problem or at least makes it easier to live with.

Full tuning procedures can be downloaded on the S & S site. Go to "Technical" page, then "Installation instructions" to download the full paperwork that came with your Super B.

I hope this helps and Good Luck.

Engine seems to flood out when increasing speed and dies

If it starts lightly smoking black smoke at high RPM it is flooding or getting too much fuel. The float is leaking you may have not set the float height correctly when you put that carb back together. Or the needle and set could be bad.

Fuel injection idling to high

Try this: Remove the rubber pipe that goes to the throttle plate at the end of the intake manifold. Open the throttle flap valve and inspect the interior for excessive carbon buildup (black gunk around the flapper and the outer circular bore)...If it is dirty, get some carb cleaner & spray the daylights out of it until it is clean clean clean. Reattach the tube and start the engine, it will smoke quite a bit until all of the cleaner in the intake is digested by the engine. This should improve the idle. What may be happening is the black gunk may not be letting the throttle valve to close fully, and WILL keep the idle up.
