Question about 2000 Honda VT 1100 C2 Shadow Sabre

1 Answer

2000 Honda Shadow Sabre, 37,000 miles While riding in the mountains of North Carolina my temperature light came on. I pulled over and shut the engine off. I did notice that my electric fan did come on for about 45 sec or so then shut off. After about 10 minutes I rode about 10 miles to meet up with the rest of the group without the temp light coming on. I checked the reserve tank and found it to be empty. I added water but not sure how much was added, maybe about 2 cups. I took off and about 5 minutes later and was flagged down by the rider behind me stating that I was leaking water. When I stopped I had a trail of water on the ground and water pouring out of the overflow. I didn't have any more water with me so I just watched my temp light which never came back on. I later checked my radiator and found it to be full. Could this be my fan going bad or something else going on. The ambiant air temp was arounf 65-70 degrees and I did try to see if if my fas was running while I was riding but I couldn't tell. I rode home, about 300 miles, and the light never came back on and again the ambiant temp was around 65 degress riding home.

The overflow hose is a common problem with these bikes, sounds like you have the same problem .Get the hose checked, if cracked or worn out then replace that overflow hose with something better from advanced auto parts. Also remove the factory clamps, and use small c-clamps.You'll have to purge the radiator. The reason the coolant/water is coming out i believe is cause the fluid isnt circulating. And no circulation means fan will not work properly, cause the sensor thinks the bike is cool. But actually its not cool so the temp light came ON. ---------As the water overflow noticed. And fan not working. This is indication of overheating.Get the fan wirings and fan switch checked. If checked out short then it has to be replaced.Get the radiator flushed and coolant checked,.If its low get it refilled. Also get the radiator hoses checked. If worn out and cracked.Get it replaced. --------- Get the radiator flushed with distilled water and actually put new fluid in the bike.It sounds like the radiator is low on fluid and the overflow isn't giving it any. The fluid in the radiator has to be able to reach the sensor to turn the fan on.
---------- Also the other possibility can be bad thermostat, having an overheat while moving is very uncommon. The fan never comes on while the bike is moving because the airflow keeps everything cool without the fan being needed.
If you were moving along just fine and then the temp light came on, you probably have a problem like a bad thermostat.
Start the bike with the radiator cap off, and watch the coolant. When the bike reaches temperature, and the thermostat opens, you should be able to see the coolant level drop, and circulate in the radiator. If the thermostat is stuck shut, it wont drop or circulate, and if its stuck open, it will circulate constantly. If it does either of those, the thermostat is shot, it needs to open and close completely and cycle correctly. If the water level drops slightly, with no circulation, your water pump is not circulating the water, and needs to be replaced. To locate the thermostat, take out the Radiator and you will find thermostat in a pipe that looks like an "L shape".---------- This troubleshooting will help.Thanks.Helpmech.

Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Engine oil level and SAE weight are too low or not circulating.
2. Insufficient or blocked air flow over the engine.
3. Heavy combustion chamber carbon deposits.
4. Ignition timing retarded due to faulty MAP, CKP, or CMP sensor.
5. Carburetor jetted too lean.
6. Leaking intake or exhaust valve.
7. Water coolant old or low change every two years.
8. Water pump failure.
9. Radiator clogged, cap loose or malfunctioning.
10. Radiator fans not coming on.
11. Clutch slipping, brakes dragging, heavy load, towing a trailer etc.
12. Idling too long without moving.
13. For constant hot weather temperatures, mountain, or desert riding conditions consider adding an oil cooler and or cylinder head cooler.

2004 Honda VT 1100 C2 Sabre starts fine but acts like its running out of gas after riding a half mile. Let it sit for awhile and It will ride for another half mile then stop again. I have changed the fuel...

Next time it does this, remove/open the gas cap and see if that helps.
If so, then the venting system for the gas tank is plugged somewhere, and you're vapor locking.
