Question about Harley Davidson FLSTFI Fat Boy Motorcycles

1 Answer

In my first attempt to change my engine oil, I drained oil from bottom of my 2001 Fatboy, from the plug on the right side towards the front of the engine, just below the Twin Cam Cover and floor board, only approx 4 oz drained out, where is this from? How to I refill that oil? P.S. I did find the right one mounted on the right side towards the rear of the engine, so oil is now changed.

I'm not that familiar with the Twin Cam engine but from what you're saying, Harley has a drain or something in the cam chest of the Twin Cam engine. This is something new for Harley as the previous engines had no means of draining the cam chest. I would imagine that this is what the oil you saw was, oil in the cam chest waiting to be pumped back to the oil tank by the oil pump that is located in the cam chest. When you restart the engine, this area will again fill itself to the proper level.

Good Luck

put plug back this is not a drain persay..my flhtc has one 2 only drain motor oil from oil tank ..primary is on left under derby cover it takes around 38 ozs Tran takes 1 qt. highly recommend a manual...your best friend.. bar none..

No it is not the primary drain. As "ultrat" said, it is merely a plug to drain the cam chest when you are working in that area. When you restart the engine, it will refill that area on it's own. The primary drain is directly beneath the derby cover and the transmission drain is on the right side of the transmission just below the clutch release mechanism and behind the exhaust system.

Which of the three drain plugs. Primary is on primary case below derby cover; transmission is on right side middle bottom of transmission, engine is at bottom of right rear frame down tube intermediately forward of rear tire. ALL are 5/8 inch hex plugs with 1/4 inch Allen socket in the middle of the plug.

Changint Oil on my 2001 Fatboy. Pulled drain plug and a half a cup of oil drained out. Pulled dip stick to see oil tank is still full. Disconnected drain line from tank leading to motor. Found it to be...

Sound like you pulled the wrong plug to me. The oil drain plug in under your bike. Look at the oil tank from the right side of your bike. Near the rear of the tank, there's a large hose that runs downward towards the rear of the transmission. It continues down and looks like it connects to a crossmember on the frame. If you'll look under that crossmember, you'll find a plug that uses an Allen wrench or hex key to remove.

Do not remove the oil line that goes from the tank to the engine. However, you said that you found it to be plugged. Plugged with what? If the oil infeed line got plugged, it's because something has gotten into the tank. Drain the tank and check to find out what is inside the tank.

Good Luck

Where does the oil come out of a 2004 Yamaha 1100 VStar Classic

Oil drain plug is located near the bottom of the engine, left side toward the front. The oil filter element is located on the right side of the engine under the cover toward the front. Changing the oil filter usually requires removal of the front exhaust pipe. There is an aftermarket filter relocation kit that replaces the filter element with a spin on filter that mounts on the front of the bike.

Cannot locate oil plug drain for my 2001 Fat Boy FLSTF

So I checked another Harley maintenance book of mine, and it says "On pre-2000 Softails, the drain is on the right side of the tranny near the dipstick. On the 2000 and later Softails, the drain is located on the bottom between the two shock absorbers. The drain plug on Dynas and FLs is located on the bottom of the transmission case next to the oil drain."

I got this from another site, I was going to say, it might not be on the bottom, but I found this, seems nobody can find it. Hope this helps.

How do I change the oil on a 2002 fat boy? Where is the drain plugs?

On the fatboy, the oil drain plug should be on the right side, just under the frame, directly below the oil tank. The primary drain is on the left side under the derby cover on the bottom. The tranny drain is on the bottom towards the rear pretty much centered.
And, as our darlin' little miss piglet said, a maual is worth the investment.
