Adjustment of the steering head bearings is a bit more complex than simply tightening them. If not done correctly, severe handling problems could result. The tension is set by using a scale and measuring the "break away" pressure on the front end. This is a procedure that I'd leave to the dealership.

What is the torque specs for the nut on the bearings on the triple tree


You have an adjuster nut that you have to tighten just until you don't have any freeplay in the bearing and then the upper triple tree goes on. The pinch bolt tightens to 21-27 foot pounds. The fork stem nut tightens to 35-40 foot pounds according to the manual that I have here. I've found that if you torque the nut that tight, it will tighten the adjustment of the steering head bearings and they'll start to "count". When a bearing is "counting", it is too tight and you can feel it bump from one roller to the next as you turn the front end. If it starts this, you'll have to loosen the fork nut and back off on the adjuster and then retighten the fork nut. Recheck for bearing adjustment. Not "counting" and no shake in the steering head. It's touchy so be patient. I've had to simply tighten the fork stem nut until I got the right tension and disregard the torque setting as long as it felt like it was tight enough not to come loose.

I believe this bike has a sealed cartridge bearing and cannot be tightened. a replacement should probably be bought.

We purchased a Radio Flyer Stroll and Go but during assembly the front wheel was put on but was put on 90 degrees the wrong way. We are not able to get the wheel off so we can correct the wheel.


Where you inserted the handle bars into the bearing assembly on the frame there is a fork clamp you had to tighten to secure the handle bars and front fork. Loosen this and you should be able to disassemble the front end. While reassembling be sure the you line up the notches on the fork with the grooves in the bearing assembly and that the handle bars are properly aligned before tightening the fork clamp.

HI, CARRY OUT THE CHECK BELOW BEFORE YOU START ADDJUSTING YOUR STEERING.
place the machine on a stand, suport the front of the machine so you can turn the steering freely from lock to lock and geting a feel for how tight the bearing is before adjusting or even undoing the top nut, grasp the forks at the bottom as you kneel in front of the machine pulling on the forks at the lowest point to feel for free play, normaly detect by a small amount of movment,or a clicking noise



tightening the steering head bearing on any bike is not difficult, but it does require some level of skill, undo the top nut on the centre of the yoke, below that you will see 2 castleated nuts some models have a locking tab between them so you cant turn 1 without first undoing the other, in this case it is best to remove the top yoke, once you can turn the nuts under the yoke you simply turn clockwise to tighten and anti to slacken,

there is a fine line between tight and slack, a bearing which has been left in a loose state for a prolonged period may require replacing, as so 1 that feels rough or notchy,

in some cases only a small amount of tightening is required, remeber when the top yoke is replaced and tightened this will put more tension on the bearing, so a bearing that feels tight without the top nut tightened will be overtight when yoke centre nut has been tightened, method of satifaction is when the top nut is tight with the steering clear of the ground in a straight ahead position the handlebars must fall from centre left, right with no friction detected, again checking the movment by pulling on the fork lowers.

OVERTIGHT BEARING WILL AFECT THE STABILITY OF THE MACHINE.

I have a 2000 Suzuki 1500 LC, I've got a wobble in the front end when I'm going about 30 -40 mph. I've been told that it's fork oil but not sure it has oil in it as it's got springs. Any idea what it...


A wobble that appears when slowing down is many times just low tire pressure. Check the front tire pressure should be 32-35 pds. Another thing that can cause a wobble is worn or loosely adjusted fork frame neck bearings(steering stem bearings). Disassemble around the handlebars down to the frame neck till you get the upper triple clamp off or can reach the adjuster nut , just underneath on top of the frame neck enough to tighten the steering stem bearings. You will need a shock adjusting tool (curved end with a single tooth) Comes standard in all Honda tool kits). Next, put a jack under the motor to lift the front wheel . Carefully wiggle the front wheel to see if you have a bad wheel bearing. If you do not have fork oil in your forks, you could possibly damage the chrome tubes. No oil would mean the forks would not go up and down smoothly. Do not add oil to your forks. Do not over fill your forks with oil. If you are not sure how much oil is in them, drain them and refill them with the correct amount. If you over fill the forks and drive the bike you will destroy the fork tubes.

remove the forks and apply some grease to the bearings. do not over tighten when you reassemble

Front fork noise over sm bumps on v star 1300


The front fork needs to be tightened by bringing the sleve(hollow tube extending from the center of the fork where its attached to the handle. As the bears wear down the gap between the two increases and the front wheel makes a clicking sound when going over small bumps/holes. Tighten the upper nut a few notches but ensure that the handle is not too tight and its rotation to left & right is free, just the gap been reduced so that there is play between the two.........................sodeep

Bicycle Fork Installation


remove front wheel
undo allen screw or bolt securing headstem to fork
remove headstem and handlebars
undo lock nut & ring retaining bearings, at top of fork tube, do not lose bearings which may be loose.
withdraw fork from fork tube, do not lose upper bearing race
remove lower bearing from old fork
install lower bearing on new fork (I prefer replacing bearings)
remove brake caliper from old fork install on new fork
insert fork in fork tube
install upper bearing (I prefer replacing bearings)
install retaining ring and lock nut on fork tube, adust untill there is no wobble, but free movement, too tight the bearings will collapse too loose the rider will fall off
tighten lock nut
install headstem
tighten headstem allen key - bolt
install front wheel
