Question about 1982 Yamaha XJ 650
Okay, with the removable filter element that I believe you have (used on many models of that era)
starting with the filter bolt with its small o ring through the cover...
place the spring on next
then the thin flat washer ******
then rotate the filter element onto the bolt working its way down to the spring (do not try PUSHING the element on as it will tend to dislodge the end seals of the element, causing filter bypass)
oil the large o ring and place in the cover groove (I use a dab or two of grease to hold in place)
install the cover /bolt assembly with the two square corners up.
**** your flat washer might be missing, as they tend to get lost in drain pans over the years...the flat washer protects the sharp end of the spring from damaging the element end seal.
