Question about 2003 Aprilia RSV Mille R

My front brakes feel spongy when I squeeze it. The brake handle almost touches the hand grip. Does this mean I need new brakes or that I may have a leak somewhere?

It means there is air in the brake line. If the fluid gets too low in the brake cylinder air gets pumped into the system when the brake is applied. A loose fitting or bad seal is usually why the fluid gets low. Fix the leak then add fluid and bleed the system of air. First bleed the master cylinder at the lever. There should be a bleeder valve on the cylinder. Put a clear rubber hose on the end of the bleeder valve. Run the hose into a container so the brake fluid doesn't get on paint or plastic parts. The fluid can mess up the finish. Now squeeze the brake lever several times in rapid succession then hold the lever in without releasing it. Open the bleeder valve slowly and fluid and air bubbles will come out of the valve. Close the valve BEFORE releasing the lever. Do the same thing multiple times until only fluid comes out of the valve. Do not let the cylinder run out of fluid while bleeding. If it does, you have to start all over again.
Now do the same procedure on the wheel caliper.
Understand that the master cylinder and / or the wheel caliper may need new seals. Please rate my answer. Thanks! My front brakes feel spongy - tombones49_9.gif

The brakes probably just need bleeding and fresh fluid.

Hi, spongy brakes is usually from air in the system, only in really old bikes and poor quality brake lines will cause spongy breaks where the brake lines expand instead of full pressure being applied to the brake pads, very rarely will the brake pads cause spongy brakes (unless over heated), once you get rid of the sponginess you will get strong braking. Bleed your front brake system taking care not to let the master cylinder run out of fluid, this is the easiest and cheapest start, once all the air is out then you can work your way through, another good way of testing your braking system, but you need to be very careful doing this and make sure your brake lines are not hard or brittle, you can squeeze the brake line at certain spots (using a pair of brake line pliers), eg. squeeze after the master cylinder. if brakes spongy than your master cylinder needs attention, if brakes hard than your problem is further down the line, calipers etc. Hope this helps.

Front brakes feel spongy when engaged. Bled the brakes (2 front calipers), no improvement. Brake handle comes almost to hand grip. Feels like when the brake handle is depressed, it goes more than 1/2 way...


I have read and re-read your problem and I keep going back to the "spongy" feel, which strongly suggests air in the lines.
Make sure you have no brake fluid leaking anywhere, especially in the "tee" where your brake line splits to feed both calipers.
Even the smallest leak will allow air to be introduced.
If you are absolutely certain that you have no air in the lines, the most likely problem is one or both caliper pistons are worn and allowing fluid to leak by under pressure.
I recommend replacing the calipers- If you rebuild them, the slightest mistake honing the cylinders will result in your needing to replace anyway.
HD parts can be very expensive, so I suggest you check out Tedds in Newburgh, NY: They have a huge selection and prices are reasonable. You will need to google it because this site keeps dropping me when I try and post the link- world wide web dot vtwinmfg dot com

Vn750 1985 brakes. I have reconditioned master cylinder but still have front brake spongy but will pump up to feel normal then after a short time have gone spongy again. Thanks for any help


You still have air bubbles trapped on the fluid hose, going to the brakes. To get rid of them, pump three times, hold the brake grip, unscrew the breathing tap down on the brakes, let it bleed, seal it and pump again. During all this procedure, you must always have the fluid reservoir on the steering bar, full, and closed to create pressure downwards. If done right, should have it in no more than 20min.

How to replace front brake line for 03 fatboy (flstfi) and bleed the front brakes system?


Just take your old line off and replace it with the new line. Be careful because the brake fluid will damage your paint if it's DOT 4. One you have replaced the brake line, fill the master cylinder with the proper brake fluid. Open the bleeder valve and let gravity do it thing. Usually once the fluid starts to flow out of the bleeder valve, all the air is gone as well.

But if the brake lever still feels spongy or no brake at all, first bleed the master cylinder. Squeeze the hand lever and hold it while you loosen the union bolt on the end of the master cylinder. Once the pressure bleeds off, close the valve and repeat the process until you get no air bubbles. Then, move down to the brake caliper and do the same thing until you get no air and a full brake lever. You must do it in this order exactly. Squeeze the lever, open the valve, close the valve, let go of the lever. Do not allow the master cylinder to run dry during the bleeding process.

loosen of the hand-brake adjustment and press the brake pedal a few times to self adjust the rear brakes.
Re-tighten the handbrake adj last.
Front brake sounds like a seized caliper,If possible remove caliper and clean and lubricate the piston.
This may work but replacement caliper may be the only other solution.Make sure the caliper slides are also clean and lubricated and the brake pads are in good order.(TRY THIS FIRST)
Also new brake shoes can make the pedal feel spongy for a couple of hundred miles until they have been run in.

Suzuki GSX 600 F (1998) soft front brake, I have upgraded to braided hoses but brake lever still feels spongy, can I upgrade the master cylinder or do I have to accept them as they are?


you can renew the master cylinder seals, the calipar seals can also cause the lever to feel spongy, they grip the pistons and pull them too far back into the bores instead of letting them return just enough to realease the brake, in this condition when you apply the brake most of the lever travel is just pushing the calipar pistons out to reach the pads and the little travel that is left is pushing the pads on to the disc, hense the spongy feel

Front brake not working and the handle feels spongy


remove the master cylinder cap on the handle bars see if your low on fluid if so add some and check for leaks also open the fluid bleeder on the caliper down at the wheel let air out this should stop the spongy feeling if not the master cylinder is bad and needs to be replace.

The housing of my brakes on the handle bars is loose and keeps moving. how do i tighten it so that it stops moving when i apply pressure on it and/or squeeze the brake lever??


If the screw is all the way tight and still slipping ... try to find a fatter part of the handle bar to mount the grip to. You will probably will not find any such that is convenient for you to continue to use the brake ... remove the grip, wrap some electrical tape around the handle bar, reattach the grip. Tighten it and give it a try.

If you loosen the wire that is connected to the gripping machanism first , you will have long enough wire to put it throu the brake grip first then tighten it back at the wheel gripping area.
