Question about 1984 Honda vt 500 ft ascot

Open Question

I have a 1984 Honda VT500 Ascot. Have no fire going to the plugs on the rear cylinder. Has 2 coils 1 for the front and one for the back cylinder. I can pull the plug for the front and test and it is firing but not the rear cylinder. I took a meter and tested the hot wire going into the front coil is hot. The hot wire feeding the 2nd coil is dead not voltage. It is a yellow wire and not sure where it it should get the voltage from. It will crank and run but only has 1 cylinder working.

SOURCE: honda 1986 vf400f nc13 engine front two cylingers not firing help

If the spark appears to be weak only for the two front cylinders, then I would suggest checking the electrical connections for the ignition coils.
If the spark for the other two cylinders looks the same (yellow), then I'd suggest checking the compression on the non-functioning cylinders. A compression reading of 140~160PSI is what you're looking for. Low compression indicates internal engine damage - or could be from something relatively simple - like insufficient valve tappet clearance.

If the bike has been sitting for a long period of time, it could be that the carburetors are plugged up with fuel varnish. This can cause some cylinders to not run. A complete carb disassembly and clean-out will be needed.

SOURCE: 2000 honda 1100 shadow spirit. Rough idle, little power.

Replace the spark plug caps and try again. On Honda's the cap is often part of the wire (a dealer part) NGK makes some inexpensive plug caps about $5 each. They should OHM out to 5000 anything above or below and you need to replace them. This should fix the problem.

Sounds like you have a seized engine. If it is seized with age, pour copius amounts of oil in through the spark plug holes and leave to soak for a few days. That will help with seized pistons. If it is bottom end, strip the engine down and repair as required.

I just bought a 1984 honda ascot vt500. It will turn over but not fire. It has been sitting for somewhere from 1 year to 3 years. When i try to jum p start it all of the lights and everything works.

the carb is clogged up. You will have to remove the float bowl and clean the jets. use spray carb cleaner. Use a very fine copper wire strand to probe the jets--do not scratch or englarge. Empty all the gas out of the bike including fuel lines. use fresh fuel. Be sure to count the number of turns you make on any adjustment screw and write them down. This will make it much easier to put back together in proper adjustment.

Have you checked the carb boot were it attaches to the cylinder head? some times they crack especially if it back fires. Doesn't take much to disrupt the fuel going to the head. Also it would be a good idea to adjust the valves, remove the caps on both sides of the cylinder head, should only take an 1/8 to a 1/4 turn on both sides.
Hopefully this helps you out.

Runnin on one cylinder

First of all, did you remove BOTH spark plug wires for the cylinder? Each one has two spark plugs/wires for a total of four.
It sounds like your carbs are out of sync. One cylinder may be getting too much fuel and fouling out. You need a carb sync tool that hooks up to the vacuum ports on each cylinder to see if both are pulling the same amount of vacuum/fuel.
