The front brake switch is located inside the right handlebar switch housing with the Start and "Run/Stop" switch. Take the switch housing apart and it's the small switch facing the front brake master cylinder. To find the rear brake light switch, locate the rear brake master cylinder. Follow the metal brake line coming out of the master cylinder going towards the rear of the bike. Underneath the transmission or there abouts, you'll find a pressure switch that is in a tee fitting with a couple of wires connected to it. Sometimes these rear brake light switches test good with an ohm meter but will not light the brake light.

Softail brake light stay on

Hi Anonymous, this problem is usually cause by the front brake light switch being out of alignment or the button not retracting all the way keeping your brake light on in a closed circuit, depending on your model year. 1996 and earlier models the right handlebar switch housing had to be tight up against the front brake control housing in order for the front brake light switch button to be fully compressed to stop continuity. In 1997 and later models the button was alot shorter and was more of an alignment issue in the switch housing. Rear brake light switches located in the rear brake line TEE can also fail in the closed circuit condition but extremely rare, usually they fail in an open circuit condition where the brake light is not able to activate. 95 Regal Custom, ABS code #95 brake switch circuit and no brake lights. Replaced SLS still no change.

Check the brake light switch (location pedal) unplug the switch & bridge the wires & if the brake lights come on the switch is faulty. all you are doing by bridgeing the wires is bypassing the switch. What is SLS?

My brake light on my 06 Softail standard is always on as if my brake level is depressed.

There are two brake light switches on your bike. One for the front brake and it's located in the right handlebar switch housing and a pressure switch that is usually underneath the bike somewhere for the rear brake. You can find the rear brake light switch by following the metal brake line that comes out of the rear brake master cylinder until you come to a switch with some wires on it. On the older bikes, you could unplug the wires to see which switch was holding the light on. If the brake light goes off when you unplug the wires, it's this pressure switch that has the light held on. If the light stays on, it is the front brake light switch. On your bike, check for looseness in the front brake lever. If the lever and pin are worn, this will cause the lever to not depress the switch in the side of the switch housing facing the front brake lever. Your front brake switch may be broken. Odds are that the front brake switch is the one causing the problem.

Follow the brake line from the rear of the rear brake master cylinder until you get to a round metal thing with two wires attached to it screwed into a Tee fitting. This is the rear brake light switch.
