Your bike has oil in three seperate areas. The engine, primary, and the transmission. To check the oil level in your engine it's the large knurled cap on the corner of the transmission with the LONG dipstick. To check transmission fluid look for the chrome clutch release mechanism on the right side of the bike. If you can't find it, simply follow the clutch cable until you get to where it goes into the transmission, that's it. In that cover, there is a large plug that requires a 3/8" Allen or Hex key to remove. It has a dipstick on it. Keep the fluid level between the two marks. Check the level with the bike standing straight up.
----------
To check the primary level, remove the derby cover and stand the bike straight up. The oil level must be no higher than the lowest point on the Clutch Spring. The aluminum outer clutch basket is made of bright aluminum, the clucth spring is a darker colored steel disc. Fill the oil no higher than the bottom of this disc. If you do, the clutch will drag and you will not be able to find neutral with the engine running.
---------

Changing fluids is good, but a mere portion of the things that need to be checked, adjusted, tightened and lubed. The plug at the bottom rear of the primary cover is the primary chain-case drain. You should not remove this cover unless it is leaking or you need to get into the primary chain-case to adjust the primary chain or for something else. fresh fluids are added through the derby cover (clutch inspection cover) and the primary chain tension is inspected through the rectangular cover near the heel shifter. On the bottom of the transmission case you will find the engine oil drain plug at the front, lower edge, facing the engine. The transmission drain plug is on the right side of the oil pan and up near the frame rail. You may need an inspection mirror to find it.You will need 1 qt of primary chain-case lubricant for the primary, 4 qts of engine oil for the engine (through the dipstick hole) and 20-24 oz's of gear lube through the Allen plug on the top right side of the transmission side cover add about half then check the level. Ease up on the fill mark. If you over fill it, the excess will blow out the transmission vent.Do not put engine oil in your transmission. It does have adequate shear strength to protect the gears.--------- The transmission oil goes in through the plug on the right hand side of the bike the clutch cable enters underneath.Fill primary oil in through the rectangular cover near the heel shifter.---------------

This should help.Thanks.Helpmech.

Wanted to change oil on 99 Ultra Classic. Removed what I thought was oil drain plug (located on bottom of engine, right side, near back of flat finned bottom). Oil drained, but not engine oil...What did...

On your Ultra, the oil pan is on the bottom of the transmission. If you pull the oil dipstick, you'll see that it goes down into the pan located under the transmission. The engine oil drain is the drain plug nearest the left front of the pan or in the middle of the pan. If the bike is on the side stand when your drain the oil, I'd pull the plug in the front so that all the oil comes out. If you pull the one in the middle, you must stand the bike up straight to get all the oil out. The transmission drain appears to be the pipe plug in the front of the oil pan. Go to www.bikebandit.com and pull up this drawing. It will show you the pan and the gasket. Notice the gasket closely, the hole down through the front of the pan looks like it goes to the transmission and the other plugs look like they are for engine oil. The plug you pulled out is the drain for the cam chest, I think. I'm not a Twin Cam mechanic but I'm pretty sure that I'm right about that particular plug. You probably didn't get any more than a couple of ounces of oil out of that area.

1st time changing oil on 2005 classic. looking for the drain plug also how much oil just for engine not trans, thanks

The oil tank for the engine is located on the bottom of the transmission. There are two drain plugs under the transmission. The engine oil drain is the drain plug closest to the front left of the oil pan. Slowly remove the plug and allow just a bit of oil to drain out so you can identify it as engine oil. It should be black, not clear. The engine holds three quarts of oil in the tank. Add the oil and then check it with the dipstick with the bike on the side stand. The dipstick has two marks on it. The upper mark is "FULL HOT" and the lower mark is "FULL COLD". Do not overfill.

Good Luck

I,ve got a 2008 Ultra classic, and want to change the fluids. It's got 8000 miles, and i dont have a owners manual. the oil, i can figure out , but the trans, and the primary I dont have an idea.

On the bottom of your transmission, there are two drain plugs, one for the transmission and one for the engine oil. The plug in the center is the transmission drain plug and the one toward the left front is the engine oil drain. The primary drain is a small pipe plug that takes a Torx wrench located at the bottom of the primary cover towards the rear of the bike.

Engine oil three quarts with filter. Then start the bike and let it run for a few minutes. Shut down the engine and check the oil level with the dipstick. The dipstick has two marks on it. "Full Cold" and "Full Hot". Fill to the full cold mark.

Transmission takes 20-24 ounces of oil and the primary takes 38-44 ounces of oil. Do not overfill the primary as it will cause your clutch to drag. All three sections take H-D Syn3 20W50 synthetic engine oil.

I have a 2001 FLHTCUI. Where do you add transmission fluid and is there a dipstick? It says there is in the owners manual but I can't seem to find it.

Yes, there is a dipstick. Right where your engine and transmission come together, there is a round cap about an inch and a half (40mm) in diameter or so with knurled edges. This is the oil spout plug and it has a dipstick. Check your oil with the bike on the side stand. There are two marks on the stick. The two marks indicate Full Hot and Full Cold. The oil level should be between these two marks. Do not overfill the oil tank that is on the bottom of the transmission.

On the bottom of the transmission threre are two drain plugs. The drain plug in the center is the transmission fluid drain, the drain on the left front is the oil drain plug. You engine takes three quarts of oil with the filter change. You transmission take 20-24 ounce of H-D transmission lube.

For a 2001 Harley Ultra Classic where is the oil drain plug located

The oil tank is on the bottom of the transmission. There are two drain plugs, one for the engine oil and one for transmission lube. The engine oil drain is the one closest to the left front of the oil tank. The drain that is more in the center is the transmission drain.

Where do you add transmission fluid on an 04 roadking

On the right side of the bike, right behind the cap that you add engine oil in. There is a chrome cover (clutch release cover) on the right end of the transmission with a large plug in it. Most of the time it takes a 7/16 "Allen" wrench to remove the plug. It will have a dip stick on the plug. Check the oil in the transmission with the bike standing straight up. If you need to add oil, you can use the Harley Davidson Syn3 oil as Harley says it can be used in either the engine, transmission, or the primary. Otherwise use Harley Davidson sythetic transmission lube. If you drain the transmission, refill with 20-24 ounces of oil.

Oil change 1999H D Electra glide

The plug ( 3/4 wrench ) under the trans when your looking at the trans cover ( right side of the bike ) is the trans. If you drained that replace it with 24 oz. of either HD trans fluid or I prefer Golden Spectro 75/140 ( much better shifting on a Harley ( trust me you'll never go back to HD trans fluid ) the drain for your motor oils is on the same pan ( on the bottom ) but it's the plug facing the front of the bike. Looks just like the trans plug. Both use a 11105 o ring which you should replace everytime ( just for piece of mind as well as leaks ) you need 4 quarts of 20/59 HD oil. Hope it helps.

Engine oil plug

Another way to locate it, is with the bike on the kickstand, look underneath of it from the right (brake) side. The oil drain plug is on the front of the square looking pan under, and to the rear of the engine. The oil drain is the plug on the front of that pan, on the left (shifter) side of the bike. The trans drain is on that same square looking pan, but towards the right side, and faces down. It screws in and out vertically, whereas the oil drain is horizontal
