Question about Honda CB 500 Motorcycles

1 Answer

My 1980 CB650 won't charge. The mechanic has checked the stator, rectifier (new), rotor, ignition boxes (new), and fixed some broken wires. He has given up on it as it still isn't charging. Is there something else to check or do I need to go through it wire by wire? What do you recommend?

If the coils in the stator are okay AND the magnets in the rotor are okay then the problem has to lie somewhere else. Is the mechanic certain that he spliced the broken wires to their correct mate???

If all the parts are new or checked okay then I would most definitely check it wire by wire and it would be more helpful if you can find a wiring diagram in a honda manual for your model.

I have a 1981 yamaha xs 650 . and my bike runs good for about two hrs and than the battery dies off on my... my mechanic tells me i need a charging rotor... help me please

I think he means it neds a new stator assembly. The rotor is a set of magnets mounted on the end of the crankshaft. Magnets never go bad. The pickup coils in the stator assembly however can go bad. The likelyhood of finding a new stator assembly is not good. I suggest you google motorcycle salvage yamaha to see what you can find. Also, get a second opinion on the problem. It could be a bad rectifier, a disconnected or broken wire, or even a battery with an internal short. The internal short would discharge the battery.

I have a 1980 suzuki 850 gs and its not charging the battery properly what should i do and where is the charging system located on the engine

As suggested, check the voltage with the engine running accross the battery. If its below 14 volts you have an issue with the stator windings/regulator/rectifier/wiring.
Do the cheapest thing first and clean up all electrical connections, esp the earths.
A manual will tell you how to test the charging system, but the Suzuki GS range has always had charging issues.
The simplist method is to fit the combined reg/rectifier unit from a Honda CB250/400 Superdream.
Always keep your engine oil topped to the max mark, as this cools the stator.
Dont leave this, it is not unknown for the entire system to fail including the CDI if left unchecked.

Either has a charging rotor problem, stator problem, or regulator rectifier problem. Get a manual and trouble shoot.
