Hi i am just about to change my cylinder head gasket and don't have a manual can you tell the common problems with removal and re fit.

Dude if i can give one bit of advice for any have a go mechanic get your self a haynes manual before you do anything and best of luck

Water in the oil


Radiator coolant in the engine oil is normally an indication of a failed cylinder head gasket or a crack in the cylinder head or both.

Running the engine in an overheated condition will cause head gasket failure and often a crack in the cylinder head.

The problem you have is coolant is escaping into the engine's lubrication passages via the failed head gasket or head crack and contaminating the engine oil. If not fixed you will cause further damage to the engine as oil contaminated with radiator coolant cannot adequately lubricate the engine.

Running a leak down test on each cylinder will confirm the leak. In this case you are going to need to have the cylinder head removed and thoroughly checked for cracks and any warpage as well as a new cylinder head gasket fitted. The condition the engine block surface will also need to be checked.

Changed my oil today.When I took the cap off to replace the oil,the cap had some white goo on it.What is this?


Could be a leaking cylinder head gasket or a small crack in the cylinder head. Is the head aluminum? Make and mileage of the vehicle will sometime help as some vehicle makes are notorious for head gasket problems. This allows coolant into the oil and causes this goo on the inside of the cap. Have a trustworthy shop check it out to be sure.

How to remove cylinder head and instalation? 1993 pickup


Far too many steps to go into here. You need a workshop manual for all the sequences and torque settings etc.

While you are at it, work out why the head gasket went in the first place. If it was through overheating, get the head crack tested and checked for warp. It could be scrap anyway.
If it failed due to corrosion, a common problem if the coolant isn't changed regularly, then make sure its flushed and filled with the correct ratio on refill.

with this issue , fouling can mean many things, i,ll assume, & i don,t like assuing at all, ? i,ll assume you mean missfiring inderperforming two different issues, two answers, (1) missfiring ,ok change all plugs and remove and overhaul number two injector, replace it,, (2) fouling,? under performing, this can have a few causes i,ll list all, pressure loss in cylinder due to either worn piston rings or valve seatings, or head gasket,?(a) piston rings, luckily this is probably not the problem as usually all 6 cylinders would be effected, (b) valve seatings , hope its not this as it,s a major opperation involving removing the cylinder head an totally reconditoning it, all valves cleaning and reseating, replacing vavle seals , new head gasket ,inlet manifold gaket , exhaust manifold gasket, a good mechanic can get away with changing only the head gasket, but that ain.t you,unfortunatly, so hope its (a) peter.

My truck is blowing white smoke and will idle for about twenty minutes and then cut itself off.


white smoke means there is a presence of water/coolant at your combustion chamber. common cause of this is blown head gasket and/or small cracks/holes in your cylinder head. if this happens, water will not circulate properly in your engine thus the vehicle will shutdown due to over heating.

what to do:
1. replace head gasket. this is quite not a DYI fix since it will require some tools like torque wrenches and some knowledge on timing.
2. if replacing the head gasket does not solve your problem, have your cylinder head resurfaced at the nearest car service center. resurfacing makes sure that your cylinder head perfectly fits with the crank case.

Audi A6 Quattro 2.8 is leaking oil btween box that oil filter screws into and the oil pan. What is that box called and the seal that is there?


that would be the oil filter cooler housing... thier is a seal much lick the one on the oil filter.. that is common to get brittle and begin to leak... easy fix.. remove oil filter, remove nut.. remove two cooler lines .. remove old seal replace... and reverse procedure to install.... good luk..

Often (but not always), a blown head gasket will also cause deposit of water on a piece of cardboard held an inch from the tailpipe output while the engine is running (when this is happening, it is likely that the catalytic converter has been ruined and the muffler will corrode in short order as well).

Sometimes drops of water will be seen dropping from the end of the tailpipe. Another clue: turn on the heater; often when the head gasket is blown an odor of antifreeze and synthetic rubber will emanate from the heater vents.
Many of the symptoms of blown head gasket can be caused by some other problem in the cooling system, without the head gasket being damaged. Conversely, other problems with the cooling system can cause a blown head gasket and/or warped head.

When checking for a blown head gasket, one of the most common tell-tale signs is a milky-gray ring around your oil cap. When coolant enters the engine oil through a crack in the head or through a blown gasket, it evaporates and leaves a milky ring around the oil cap. Another easy way to tell is to check your oil dipstick. Change your oil and pull out the dipstick. Make sure that you take note of how far up the dipstick the oil is. Top off your cooling system and fill your cooling reservoir to the top. Screw radiator cap back on and start engine. Run engine for about 20-30 mins. or until it reaches normal operating temperature. Allow engine to cool (engine must cool completely to get accurate oil reading!!). Check oil dipstick again. If the oil has a watery appearance and has risen noticeably up the dipstick, the you probably have a blown head gasket or a warped head. Also look for a dripping, sweet-smelling liquid coming out of your tailpipe. Any of the above symptoms could be the result of a blown head gasket. The easiest way to tell is with a compression meter. This replaces the spark plug and lets you know what compression each cylinder is running at. If your compression is abnormally low, then you have a blown head gasket or a warped head. (note: consult repair manual for appropriate compression of each cylinder.)

Water in the oil


Two common causes are intake gaskets and cylinder head gaskets.
Most times this can be isolated by doing a compression or cylinder leakdown test. Otherwise, the intake needs to come off before removing heads....Carefully inspect the intake gaskets around the water passages for signs of coolant bypass or deterioration. If you find any, likely that is the problem. If you find any engine oil in the cooling system, that points to a head gasket.
Reason for this common problem is simply that aluminium belongs in race cars not on street cars...It's growth rate is too radical and causes too much lateral movement, as well as swelling and shrinkage for gaskets to remain sealed. Gasket manufacturers have dealt with this pretty well but it has not been solved completely.
Intakes leak at a rate of about 4 to 1 compared with head gaskets from what I've seen, so most likely that's where you will find the problem.
Coolant can cause bearing damage so after completing the repair, make sure you change the oil BEFORE starting the engine. In severe cases, I use cheap oil, change it, run it at idle, then change it again, to purge any that remains inside lifters and galleys. Then use a good quality oil when finished. (don't forget the filter!)

Cylander head side gasket for V6 engine


hi view sonic,

if you're not well verse with engines, i suggest that you leave it to the experts,
this is a delicate matter replacing your cylinder head gasket.

you have to remove a lot of things and it takes a lot of experience in doing this.

you only have one cylinder head gasket.

OR you can try tightening the cylinder head bolts using a torque wrench and see if that would solve your problem.

just remove the cylinder head cover and you can tighten the bolts from there.
