The engine will require running in as the bore must have been scorred as well and should have been scoured with wire wool to allow the rings to bed in.
Is the tapping coming from what you have replaced?
Find a long screwdriver and put the tip on the top of the engine and the handle up against your ear and listen. Locate the source of the knocking/tapping and then you will know the cause and area.
Hope that helps.

Hi
Sounds like a broken piston ring, & now its embedded itself into the piston & / or barrel
Remove exhaust pipe & shine a light up into barrel / piston to inspect !!

Ride safe

KX80, overheating ?

I'm not familiar with this bike but it sounds like it could be air locked and causing it to overheat.I found the best way to remedy problems like this is to get it up to temp, shut off and lay bike down too one side then the other.Tilt forward then back, check to see if coolant level dropped. If that dont work pull a vaccum on cooling system and see if it holds when warm.

Installed new cylinder, piston and rings on my 03 kx80. I drove it around for a half a day and it quit. It acts like it will run but dies out. took the carb off and cleaned it and no signs of carb probs.

When u put those new things on the motorcycle, u go easy with the motor, u shouldn't had driven it half day. Do a compression test. check your timing again, change your spark plug, was your timing chain properly tensioned

I have a1987 kawasaki kx 250. it is very hard to kick

Once u have the piston out then there is a tool you can use for extracting the rings or you can simply use strips of tin and slide it behind the rings from were the two ends of the ring meet and slide them round the piston. Be very careful when putting the new rings on because ther are quite brittle
