For overheating, Check that you do not have air trapped in the cooling system. If there is air, you may need to dispel it from the cooling circuit.

Sounds like it needs a good carb cleaning or good fuel. Smell the gas and make sure it is good 1st. Then, Make sure battery is charged up. Then, try again, if that fails, take carbs off bike and give good cleaning inside and out. Good luck and don't loose any parts... Sincerely HDTV GURU JAY

Bike starts and idles smooth and evenly(no skip beats or rev changes).when I then attempt to rev engine it proceeds to splutter and can not get any power to even move off in 1st gear.

Could be some dirt or moisture in the carberattor try loosening the drain screw on the bottom of the bowl. If this doesn't work the carb needs a good clean.

Why does my DT125 splutter at hight revs

Sounds like either the bike is starving for gas at higher RPM's, or you're hitting the rev limiter.

I have a 1981 yamaha xl 250 3y engine. bike battles to start, wen it eventually does manage to start it sounds as if the valve clearances are out, loud tapping noise that gets louder as the revs increase....

Clearances about 4 and 5 thou.
But it sounds a bit more than that if its hard to start and is very loud, the cam and or rockers may be worn, very common after 20 years

Bike coughs, splutters and even backfires more so in low rev's

Either take the carbs off and clean them or add some fuel additive to clean the system. Sounds like you have a clogged jet.
