Question about Harley Davidson XLH Sportster 883 Hugger Motorcycles

1 Answer

The starter on my 2000 sportster 883 is acting up. Bike hasn't been started in 6 months. Cranked great several times, but would not start. Battery is 3-4 years old, but was cranking strong. Starter clicks, even with a good charger on it.

I suspect the battery. Take the battery out and take it somewhere that they can do a "load test" on the battery. It's never good to just let a battery sit. When you let the battery sit without a "smart charger" on it, the charge bleeds down and the plates in the battery start to deterioate. Then, when you try to get it back by charging, you find that one or two cells are bad. The the bad cells will also prevent the votage from a jump starter from going through as well. Check the battery first, if it's 3 to 4 years old, it probably needs replacing anyway. Most motorcycle batteries don't last much longer than that unless they are premium grade batteries.

Good Luck

My 2004 883 sportster will not start. It won't turn over

If it won't turn over, you either have a battery issue or a starter issue. (could be a wiring short also, but rare) Most likely if the motor spun over for a long period of time before starting, it used all the current in the battery. Charge the battery and see if this helps. If so it could be the stator not charging the bike. The other item could be a loose wire on the starter. Have this checked. I hope this helps, let me know how it turns out. Thanks!

Headlights not working, rpm gage not lighting up, neutrel light not coming on

Hi Anonymous, and the usual suspects are:
1.Ignition/Light Key Switch not in IGNITION position.
2.Engine Stop switch in the OFF position.
3.Discharged battery, loose or corroded connections (solenoid chatters).
4. Bank Angle Sensor tripped and Ignition/Light Key Switch not cycled to Off and then back to Ignition
5. Starter control circuit, relay or solenoid faulty.
6. Electric starter shaft pinion gear not engaging or over-running clutch slipping.

I have a 883 harley davidson sporster, was riding the bike and road over a bump and bike shut down and won't start

I'd check the battery first. I've seen the post break loose from the batteries in many Sportsters and leave them dead on the road. I've only seen this happen once on a Big Twin. Why? I have no idea. If nothing on the bike works, this may be the problem. If everything else works but it just won't start, I need more information. Does the starter engage and the engine turn over?

Check you have connected battery leads properly, failing that, check you have not blown a fuse,
Just as a further tip, if you intend to leave your bike for a while why not get a trickle charger, you can opt for a special designed one ie Oxford Optimiser, or Cheaper if you live in the U.k. you can get a Solar One frok Maplin, reduced to £9.99 they are great, Hope This helps

93 HD Sportster 1200 will not start!

Have you tried to bypass the starter button/switch? Use a heavy jumper wire to go between the starter terminal and the positive battery terminal. Turn the key to "On" position, make sure "Run/Off" switch is turn on. Make sure bike is in neutral. I've started guys bikes with coat hangers before when they lost had trouble with the starter button. If the bike starter turns over, you'll at least have a place to start looking for the issue. Also you said you checked the battery, what was the voltage?
