My 1996 ford Exsplorer sport is stuck in 3rd gear and i wnt to know what may cause that to happen. It was shifting normal but hard going into gear and then one day it just stuck in 3rd while shifting.

When did you last replace trans filter and fluid? Dirt may be causing shift valve to stick.

Hi...your problem is usually caused by the ****** shift linkage being stuck in two gears at the same time which can sometimes happen from shifting out of sequence. In order to fix this you need to get under the vehicle and manually shift one of the trannys linkage levers into a different position to free it so you will be able to shift normally once again. NOTE: Be extremely careful when working under the vehicle and take every precaution to ensure your safety first and foremost!

the car is in whats called limp mode, it allows you to drive it to get it serviced.. most likely you have a shift soleniod that is bad.. you will need to get it to some one who can read the error codes..
