On the shaft housing of the pump that goes up into the gear case, there is a "window" or little cut out place. With the cams installed and timed, slide the pump into the gear case with the mark on the pump drive shaft aligned in the window. It has been a long time but I'm pretty sure I'm right on this.

I have a 1976 Super Glide that while it cranking, it has oil leaking out the breather hose, when it fire's, it quit's.


Hi Anonymous, it's called wet sumpping. Evo's and earlier engines were famous for oil draining out of the oil tank past the oil pump check ball/valve and into the bottom end when left without starting for long period of time (winter storage). When the bike is restarted the piston downstroke creates pressure in the bottom end which is routed back through the gearcase, up the push rod tubes and into the rocker boxes and finally into the air cleaner where unspent fuel particles are recycled back through the carburator and into the combustion chamber. Oil mist and air are seperated by a baffling system in the cam gearcase compartment. Under normal circumstances there is only a couple ounces of oil in the gearcase and bottom end. If the bottom end has a gallon of oil in it, well you get the picture and the mess. Best way to prevent oil eruptus is to drain it before it has a chance to to relocate and take up residence in your bottom end. Enjoy the new season.

Is it commom for oil pumps for 76 sportster to not pump oil when gas is in oil?


If the oil pump is somewhat worn, and the oil is really thinned out with gas, yes there is a possibility it will not pump. I had a 1976 XLCH, that I had to do the top end on. I checked the oil pump and replaced the gear set. I believe there may be a wear plate on either side of the gear set as well. If you drain everything from the tank, and take the oil pump apart, clean and check for wear, replace those parts mentioned, make sure the housing is not worn or damaged, put it back together and time the oil pump, it should take car of your problem. Fill the oil tank with Lucas 20-50w or 50w Lucas Synthetic. Oil this thick will eventually mix in the primary chain chamber and cause the clutch to slip. I just used to change oil more often. Oil is cheaper than a new engine or clutch. One thing: to own a 1976 XLCH means you need to like to work on bikes. Personally I live for it. I now have a 1981 XLH that I brought back to life.

Oil leaking from oil tank into primary on a 1976 flh 1200 hd


The oil is most likely seeping into the engine and then into primary on your bike. This commonly know in this area as "oil sumping". It's quite common on the old Shovelheads and on Softails. The reason is that the oil tank is higher in the frame than the engine and gravity does it's thing over time. If the bike is allowed to sit up for an extended period of time, the oil will seep past the check ball in the oil pump and fill the crankcase with oil. Once the crankcase gets filled, the oil seeps into the primary through the Timken bearings on the left side of the engine.

If the primary is still in it's stock configuration, simply put a deep pan under the bike and start it up. It will pump a lot of oil out of the crankcase vent hose underneath the engine but it will eventually stop. Unless the primary has been converted to a "closed wet system" like an Evo has, the engine will pump the oil out of the primary as well. After a few minutes of running, shut the engine down and check the oil level. You can leave the oil dipstick out and watch to make sure oil is being pumped back into the tank. When it seems like all the oil has quit "puking" out of the engine, make sure the oil level is at least to the lower mark on the dipstick. Like I said, if the bike has been sitting up for a while, this is quite common.

Now, if he bike has been running and all the oil is being pumped into the engine but isn't being pumped back out, you may have a scavenge gear key sheared. This is unusual on a Shovelhead because they had metal breather gears in them. The Evo engines, on the other hand have plastic breather gears in them and they will break a tooth off the plastic gear, it'll go into the oil pump scavenge gears, shear a key, and the oil pump will quit pumping oil. If this is the case, you will not see any oil being pumped back into the oil tank. You can tell when it's being pumped back because the oil in the tank will be moving and it will be kinda foamy on top. This is because the oil is being pumped back to the tank. If the pump is not pumping the oil back to the tank, you must disassemble the oil pump or the cam chest and replace the sheared key.

On your '87 Softail, the engine breather vent is behind and below the oil pump. The air from the breather is routed into the engine air filter by a metal pipe and rubber tubing that runs from the breather vent to the air filter. It is common to get a bit of oil in the air filter because of this system. The system was designed to meet EPA regulations of the time. Since then, the breather system has been modified to allow the engine to breathe at the top of the heads instead of down low on the engine. This resolves some of the problem with oil getting into the air filter but it still does not eliminate it. The only way to eliminate the oil from getting into the air filter is to reroute the air from the crankcase breather vent to somewhere else. Most people just let it exhaust underneath the bike by putting a small breather filter on the end of a short piece of rubber hose connected to the breather vent.

Revtech 110 blowing oil out the air filter, I sent my bike in for its first service (1000 Miles) and since the service the motor keeps spewing oil out the air filter... oil level reduced as i thought...


Oil coming out of the breather is normal on these engines by the way of design, with basically no way to stop it. There is about 1/2 qt of oil in the bottom end of an engine, as the pistons travel downwards, the air that is under them is being pressurized and is vented out of the engine by a rotary breather valve in the case. The air picks up a small amount of oil from the bottom end as it leaves, then the air/oil mist is vented either into the air cleaner (EPA Regulations) or best if vented to the atmosphere. When it's vented into the air cleaner, some if it recirculates into the engine and out the exhaust, the rest saturates the air filter and then eventually gets blown all over the side of the bike. The best way to vent it, is to route a hose from the breather system down to the frame between the engine and trans, run it under the bike on the right side, point the hose down to the ground and zip tie it in place...Be sure to point the end of the hose down & away from the tire.
If your breather bolts start to leak oil...remove them, and use brake cleaner to completely remove all oil from them, the washers, brackets and threads in the head. Use liquid teflon thread sealant on the bolt threads, and a light film of black rtv on the faces of all the washers and brackets, install everything, let sit for 24 hours, then ride.......if done properly and rtv is CURED, it won't leak...
Also note that most HD's with the oil tank mounted under the seat and are left sitting for a couple months will PUKE oil from the breather, this is due to the gravity....the oil will slowly seep through the oil pump and collect in the bottom of the crankcase and get blown out the breather when the bike is started ...

How do u set the timing on a oil pump for a 76 harley sportster xlh 1000 lay down pump


On the oil pump shaft housing, just below the gear, there's a small square slot cut out of the housing. If you rotate the oil pump shaft, you'll see a dot on the shaft. You want this dot on the shaft in the slot in the housing when the Top Dead Center mark is in the timing hole on the other side of the engine. You have to install the oil pump like you would a distributor. You turn the dot away from the hole and when you put the pump into position, the oil pump drive gear turns the shaft while the pump goes up on the studs. When you get seated, the marks should be aligned.

Dumping oil out of generator breather tube


Check the oil level, if the fuel runs freely to the carb and runs out it may have filled your crank case with fuel. turning it over with less power than it needs will ruin the starter, battery cables and start relay. Anyhow, if crank case is flooded with fuel clean carb to remove trash,so the float can do its job.Change oil,and air filter,clean sparkplugs. OK if i took a wrong turn stay with me, check pistons for compression.If piston is cracked or the rings are bad or not set,pressure from the piston could escape into the crankcase and blow oil out anywhere.Good luck Mr.Schnot.
