Backfiring through the carb isn't a timing issue unless you're firing at BDC (180 degrees out).
or have bad/missing/cracked piston rings / hole in the piston.
I mean, correct me if I am wrong, but that thing IS a 2 stroke, right?

An Honda XR 80 is a 4 stroke and valve timing is critical.

Ah, sorry, my memory fails me, I thought it was a two stroke.
Well, it's obviously firing too soon then, or the intake valve isn't closing fully, or the cam is WAY out.
You've already rated the answer though, so I'll move on.

1987/88 fzr750 cannot see timing mark on crank to set up cam timing can see three lines on crank which to use?

hi,this might help, the way i do any engine is simply, rotate the engine untill no1 cylinder reaches top dead centre, the three marks on the crank will be(normally) 3deg before tdc, then tdc, then 3 deg after tdc.,so no1 to tdc,see whwt the marks line up on(normally the centre of the cdi pickup )then set the camshafts, these are normally marked to run on a level plane with the engine rocker cover,so 1 mark on the front cam normally points to the front of the engine on a level with the roker cover base and the rear cam mark normally points to the rear of the engine with the mark level with the rocker cover base, then you reinstall the cam chain and sprockets, keeping the front of the camchain tight (the rear of the chain will tighten after the tensioner is reinstalled)if you have a workshop manual follow that,as what i have said is general rule of thumb and it may vary slightly to the manual, hope this helps..,.cheers

Trying to remove magneto on 1987 honda xr80 bike will not fire

first you need to get a fly wheel puller. then remove the nut in the middle of fly wheel, insert fly wheel puller, reverce thread, tighten pin and it will pop off fly wheel.when you put it back on remember to line up "woodruff key",its a little notch on fly wheel whitch lines up with a ridge on cam shaft. if you cant fix your problem and you have spark its probobly your coil and condencer.

Honda CRF 100 timing

Turn the motor over clockwise until the punch mark on the gear lines up with the arrow mark on the side case. Check to be sure that the cam lobes are facing to the rear of the bike, if they are pointing toward the front keep going until they face back and the punch mark aligns up with the mark on the case.ab798e0.jpg

Check the cam gear to make sure the two marks on the gear are level with the surface of the head.
