If the carb is adjusted correctly, the engine will not idle without the choke when cold. I will usually take at least 3 to 5 miles of riding to get the engine warm enough to idle by itself without the choke. If your bike is a full operating temperature, it should idle at about 1000 RPM. If it's idling higher than this, you need to slow it down a bit.

Remove the air filter cover and look at the top right side of the carb. You'll see a screw there . This is the throttle stop screw. Turn the screw counterclockwise to lower the idle speed to 1000 RPM or so. Blip the throttle and let it settle back to idle. Reset it if necessary. Once set, put the air cleaner cover hand on.

4700 not a lot of miles. This motorcycle needs to run. It will be rough until you can get the carb cleaned. I would keep doing what you have been doing for a while. After a couple hundred miles if it doesn't improve, you might want to consider having the Harley shop give it a good tune up. Check the plugs ...

How do i put oit in a 2005 harley sportster 1200

Hi Anonymous, the engine oil dipstick on Softail and Sportster models is located on the right hand front side of the oil tank and the Harley Bible says, engine should be at normal operating tempurature, let idle on jiffy stand for two minutes. Shut off engine and hold bike straight up and dipstick all the way in, correct engine oil level will be at the top full mark. Do not overfill oil tank as this will cause engine breathing issues. On Dyna and Touring models The engine oil dipsticks are located on the right front top corner of the transmission and the engine oil pan is underneath the transmission. The engine oil level is checked in the same manner as Softails and Sportsters. If you are having oil carryover or breathing issues (dipstick launch) try running oil level half way between the add and full marks, running the engine at this oil level will not harm normal operation. Good luck

It seems like my idle is too high for my 04 1200 custom sportty. what should it idle at?

It should idle between 900 and 1000 RPMs when at full operating temp. If it's equipped with a carb, remove the air filter cover. You'll see the square looking top on the carb. Look on the right side, towards the front of the bike, at the top of the carb and you'll see a screw. This is the throttle stop screw. Turn it counterclockwise to slow the idle.

Good Luck
Steve.

Have a1200 sportster it will not idle slowley

Once the bike is up to full operating temperature, remove the air filter cover. Just forward of the top of the carburetor, there is an idle speed stop screw. Turning the screw counterclockwise will lower the idle speed.

Good Luck

Layed up my 1200 sportster for 8 months while overseas.now running rough with high idle when normal temp and cutting out sometimes.im thinking carb .ive adjusted the idle but still not right

If your bike sat for that long with fuel in the carb, it's probably gummed up the carb on the inside. The carb needs to be disassembled and cleaned out on the inside. This is job best left to someone who is experienced in this area.

Maybe it wasn't flushed and there was still some old oil in it.
Do these things have a level indication?
If the level is right, start the bike and run it for a minute or so, watch the oil light. Then stop it, leave it a few mions to let the oil settle in the sump and check it again.
What I mean by flushing out, have a look at how it's done on a different type of bike -
